The Mission Advancement unit works closely with Synod’s Communications unit to support the mission and ministry efforts of the Office of National Mission, the Office of International Mission, and Pastoral Education, which all report to the Chief Mission Officer. The Chief Mission Officer, on behalf of the President, shall supervise fundraising activity according to the policies established by the Board of Directors of the Synod.

Essential Job Functions
This position provides essential support to the organization’s grant-proposal writing and grants reporting function within Mission Advancement, including accurate record-keeping and process fulfillment. It expands the capacity of the LCMS to submit proposals before all eligible funding agencies, foundations and organizations beyond the sole grants position within Mission Advancement.
The capturing and compiling of information from within the organization that is required to submit a professional grant proposal and follow-up report.
Solicit and select photos to compliment and support the text of a grant application, progress report, or impact story.
Working with other staff members, identify funding opportunities and search for grants to support a wide array of projects – from unrestricted operating expenses to equipment, supplies, scholarships and highly specific project.
Proposal draft reviews and editing.
Proposal submission and response tracking.
Prepare individual (external) proposal review forms and track circulation.
Funder customer-service such as written thank you notes and providing status reports, answer questions, maintain up-to-date contact information, etc.
Maintain records in hard copies and computer databases.
Participating in meetings relating to grants and funders, as directed by the Manager- Grants and Foundations.
Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
At least three or more years’ experience in grant research and proposal/report writing.
Development/fund-raising experience desired.
Associate degree (bachelor’s is preferred).
Past or current membership in a professional association (ALDE, AFP, etc.) is desired.
Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
Excellent written communication skills. (Ability to write coherent, organized and compelling proposals).
Excellent organizational skills, able to manage time and resources effectively and efficiently.
Solid command of the English language (usage, punctuation, grammar.)
Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills.
Ability to apply ministry knowledge and needs to a funding opportunity while aligning with funders’ objectives.
Knowledge of budgeting, accounting and auditing policies.
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Adobe.
Ability to utilize proprietary Customer Relationship Management software and grant management software.
Proficient in the use of a variety of social media platforms.
Ability to organize, prioritize and manage multiple priorities (simultaneously) with varying timelines and deadlines.
Functions well in an environment of deadlines and timelines; demonstrated ability to meet or surpass deadline expectations.
Member of a congregation of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod preferably coupled with knowledge of its organizational structure, partner groups and auxiliaries, doctrine/theology and experience in service in an LCMS-related entity.
