  • The LCMS Office of National Mission (ONM) coordinates and supports domestic ministries that serve congregations and schools through the districts of the Synod (Bylaw 3.8.2.3).

Reporting / Working Relationships

  • Reports to the Managing Director of Church Planting, Renewal and Support
  • Collaborates with other ONM staff members, as arranged, assigned and supervised by the Managing Director of Church Planting, Renewal and Support.
  • Leads collaboration and coordination within Synod offices and operating units, other Synod agencies (i.e., districts, synodwide corporate entities such as LCEF or LCMS Foundation, etc.) recognized service organizations, auxiliaries, and other Synod partners and stakeholders in participation and support of Hispanic ministry.
  • Promotes Hispanic ministry among districts, circuits, congregations, and other LCMS entities.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides leadership, coordination, and content contribution in the design and development of resources for witness and outreach, church planting, mercy initiatives and leadership training within Hispanic communities served by LCMS congregations and districts.
  • Identifies resources for translation into the Spanish language and coordinates translation efforts.
  • Represents and promotes LCMS Hispanic Ministry at conferences, conventions, workshops, meetings, and other venues.
  • Serves as liaison between the ONM and other LCMS entities, districts, congregations, universities, seminaries, and partners involved in training Hispanic ministry leaders, developing Hispanic ministry resources, and supporting Hispanic congregations.
  • Provides on-site visitation for support, encouragement, and consultation to existing LCMS Hispanic ministries
  • Provides consultation with LCMS districts engaged in Hispanic ministry, when requested by district president.
  • Develops strategy to best network across the LCMS with Hispanic ministry leaders to share best practices, lend support to one another and demonstrate mercy in close proximity to Word and Sacrament ministry.
  • Collaborates with the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) Region of the LCMS Office of International Mission in support of national and international LCMS Hispanic ministry.
  • Oversees the review, analysis, and determination of grant requests from Hispanic congregations and ministries.
  • Initiates and manages contracts in support of LCMS Hispanic ministry, including contracts for translation of resources into the Spanish language.
  • Collaborates with LCMS Communications on print and electronic communications regarding LCMS Hispanic ministry.
  • Collaborates with the LCMS Office of Pastoral Education, as assigned, to support the recruitment and retention of Spanish speaking church workers.
  • Prepares and submits grant requests to support the ongoing work of LCMS Hispanic Ministry.
  • Maintains an active and current directory of Hispanic congregations, Hispanic ministries, and Spanish speaking church workers.
  • Carries out other projects and assignments relating to Hispanic ministry as assigned by the Managing Director of Church Planting, Renewal, and Support.

Education and Experience

  • An ordained minister of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod faithful to the Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions.
  • A member in good-standing of a Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod congregation.
  • Supportive of the Synod’s constitution, bylaws and policies and familiar with the structure, polity, organization, and procedures of the Synod.
  • A minimum of 10 years of parish experience, with special consideration given to time serving in Hispanic ministry.
  • Demonstrated successful leadership or experience in Hispanic ministry in a district, congregation, or organization.

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Fluent in English and Spanish, including excellent writing and public speaking skills in both languages.
  • Self-starter with ability to work in, adapt to, and help shape a dynamic working environment.
  • Proactive leader able to work creatively and innovatively with a diversity of people and organizations active in Hispanic ministry.
  • Ability to work with and collaborate with persons and stakeholders in non-Hispanic ministries and services in the Synod.
