General Function

The Director of Congregational Care is responsible for developing, organizing, and managing the Congregational Care Ministry of Manchester UMC in collaboration with key stakeholders. They are a great listener who is highly relational, empathetic, and caring.

This person is emotionally, mentally, and spiritually comfortable supporting congregants and their families during difficult life situations (e.g., illness, accidents, hospitalizations, bereavement, etc.). They serve the congregation and community through their presence, prayers, and coordination of resources. This person has healthy boundaries and mechanisms to process the situations they encounter.

This person is a non-anxious presence, an excellent communicator and able to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations. They can coordinate efforts independently and successfully from conception to completion. This person must be able to simultaneously handle competing priorities and confidential matters in a professional and timely manner.

This person will be a compassionate and collaborative leader, who is committed to, and supports, the vision and mission of Manchester UMC and its leadership.

Entry Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience as a pastor, chaplain, counselor, therapist, or social worker a plus
  • Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) hours a plus
  • Certified Stephen Ministry Leader (within 6 months of hire if not already)

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, organize, and manage the congregational care ministry in coordination with clergy, staff, and Stephen Ministers.
  • Coordinate, schedule, and conduct hospital visits in collaboration with clergy and Stephen ministers.
  • Develop and implement programs, support and resources for persons experiencing serious illness, divorce, death, or other difficult situations.
  • Manage the Pastor on Call program and be the first point of contact for congregational care needs.
  • Develop and implement strategies to help congregants who are unable to physically attend worship (e.g., rehab, shut-ins, chronic illness, etc.) stay connected with the church community.
  • Work with clergy, staff, and volunteers to pro-actively and regularly reach out to congregants who have become disconnected/absent from the life of the church.
  • Recruit and provide guidance, resources, training, and support for the Stephen Ministry Team.
  • Provide guidance, resources, and support, as needed, for the Prayer Team, Prayer Shawl team, Greeting Card team, and other congregational care groups.

Other

  • Coordinate, track and respond to prayer requests Coordinate congregational care communications (prayer list, hospitalization notifications, etc.)
  • Coordinate funeral arrangements with families, clergy, staff, and funeral homes
  • Input care notes into Realm profiles.
  • Coordinate Good Samaritan Program
  • Serve as a member of the Program Staff Team
  • Protect and maintain confidentiality across all settings and forms of communications
  • Foster strong working relationships with Manchester UMC staff and coordinate with them on systems, procedures, policies, and vision to ensure alignment
  • Other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Pastor of Ministry and Leadership to support the ministry of Manchester UMC

Work Environment

  • This person is expected to work 20 hours per week including occasional weekends and evenings. Some weeks may necessitate 1 to 8 additional hours depending on congregational needs and supervisor approval. This is an hourly role.
  • This role will have access to the Communications Team to assist with communication and marketing needs.
  • This role partners with a well-trained and active Stephen Ministry team.
