General Summary of the Position

Responsible for the compilation and maintenance of sacramental records, historical material and ecclesiastical artifacts, historical documents, photographs, newspaper clippings and other activities necessary to fulfill the requirements of Canon Law and to preserve the cultural heritage of the Catholic Church in the present and former areas of the Diocese of Dallas. Provides access to such material for legitimate research. Responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Diocese of Dallas Archives Museum.

Responsible for compiling and documenting the history of the Diocese of Dallas and its predecessor ecclesiastical jurisdictions and publishing same in print and electronic format for use of diocesan schools and other agencies and for the promotion of an understanding of the contributions of the Catholic Church and/or individual Catholics to the history and development of our nation and culture. This would include but not be restricted to presentation of workshops and classes for parishes, teachers and other entities.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Position

  • All obligations as defined by the Code of Canon Law and all complimentary canonical norms
  • Oversees the operation of the Diocese of Dallas Archives and Museum, including the preparation of budgets, the supervision of personnel and volunteers and the protection of vulnerable archival records, documents, photographs, artifacts and ecclesiastical appointments.
  • Manages physical records as well as works to digitize physical records, where possible.
  • Records by written and electronic means the history of the Diocese of Dallas as it has developed and is continuing to develop. Specifically, this includes historical publications, oral and video histories as well as PowerPoint presentations.
  • Prepares classes and other presentations on diocesan and Church history for parishes and diocesan agencies.
  • Assists the Chancellor in research and development of diocesan and clergy records.
  • Maintains Baptismal Record catalog for all baptisms performed in the Diocese of Dallas for parishes that are presently part of the Diocese or which have been at one time. Responds to inquiries for Baptismal Records and assists parishes in research on historical matters.
  • Maintains general historical files on the Diocese, clergy and parishes.
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • A comprehensive understanding of Church structure and operation; a sense of history; knowledge of the Diocese and its history.
  • Strong relationship skills.


Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in a theological discipline, library science, or archival science.
  • Experience working in a parish or the diocesan pastoral center for at least five years.

  • A strong commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of the Church.
