Purpose: To help provide a loving Christian environment that nurtures each child in their spiritual, cognitive, physical, emotional and social development. To provide developmentally appropriate learning experiences as a part of a balanced program of early childhood education which lays the foundation for language, reading, writing and math skills development.

Qualifications and Requirements: All Mentors must be at least 18 years old with a minimum education of high school. Mentors must be Christians and must be comfortable helping children learn about God as directed in the Wee Learn Curriculum. Mentors must complete 15 hours of approved child development training yearly, have a current TB test, as well as receive CPR and first aid training and certification as required by the State Licensing Minimum Standards.

Additional Qualifications - A Mentor must

  • Be in good physical and mental health
  • Be able to lift a child (up to 30 lbs.) when needed
  • Be able to get on the child’s level (which includes getting on and off the floor comfortably)
  • Be able to actively hear the children
  • Be able to see the children to monitor the classroom, playground and transition activities
  • Have an adequate use and understanding of the English language
  • Complete 8 hours of preservice training, if required by Minimum Standards

General Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute the lesson plans utilizing the provided curriculum
  • Request needed supplies on a timely basis
  • Communicate positively with parents via signs posted on the classroom door each day, notes sent home, or other designated ways of sharing information with parents regarding their child’s daily experience at ECLC
  • Post an updated schedule in the room at all times
  • Take attendance each day and place report outside the classroom door
  • Create, maintain and organize age-appropriate learning materials based on lesson plans and activity schedules
  • Facilitate children’s development and growth by meeting the changing needs of each child
  • Use positive discipline techniques as outlined in the Discipline and Guidance Policy
  • Maintain a clean and orderly room which includes cooperating with other church organizations who use the same space
  • Appropriately disinfect toys, mats, cribs, tables, etc. using the designated disinfectant
  • Be familiar with emergency procedures regarding evacuation routes for fire and severe weather events
  • When leaving the room, take emergency pack (including names of children present) with you
  • Attend designated training opportunities and staff meetings. Teachers are responsible for making sure they have the 15 hours of training required and for making up any missed training opportunities
  • Notify the Director of questions or concerns regarding a child or parent
  • Notify the Director of needed repairs or maintenance as soon as possible

Service:

  • Normal work hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Our program follows a typical school year, beginning in late August and finishing in late May. We follow the Dallas Independent School District calendar for holidays and inclement weather events. Teachers are expected to attend training and preparation times the week prior to the beginning of school. They must also be present at an open house during that week to get acquainted with parents and children. An additional summer program is offered on Tuesday/Thursday from mid June through July which utilizes teachers from the ECLC program.
