POSITION:
The Archdiocese of Denver is seeking a passionate and dynamic person to serve as the Director of Mission Advancement promoting and extending the vision and mission of Christs Church in Northern Colorado. This exciting position is responsible for managing a skilled team of professionals and for developing meaningful relationships and soliciting gifts from the largest donors across the Archdiocese of Denver (AOD). The Director of Mission Advancement is called upon to share and articulate the vision and needs of AOD ministries and initiatives and invite donors to support one of most authentically dioceses in the entire country.

MISSION ADVANCEMENT:
The AOD Mission Advancement operates on a consolidated model where development efforts on behalf of the various diocesan ministries and initiatives are conducted in a coordinated and cooperative fashion. Development activities include direct gift solicitation, management of donor cultivation events, donation processing, database management, grant writing and coordination of campaigns and appeals across various ministries and appeals including:

  • Seeds of Hope (Catholic School Scholarship Fund)
  • St. John Vianney Seminary
  • Redemptoris Mater Seminary
  • Prophet Elijah House (retired clergy home)

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Director of Mission Advancement will be responsible for overseeing Prospect Management & Research activities, the Major Gifts Program, Events, and work closely with the Grants Department. The Director of Mission Advancement will work in collaboration with multiple ministries/organizations and AOD departments to craft fundraising strategies across multiple channels including campaigns, appeals, events and other marketing projects.
The Director of Mission Advancement will work closely with the Director of Campaigns and the Director of Database Management and Technology Systems. The Director of Mission Advancement is a member of the leadership team within Mission Advancement and reports to the Chief Mission Advancement Officer (CMAO).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Fundraising and Donor Management

  • Works closely with the CMAO and various Ministry leaders to develop and drive fundraising strategies that address immediate and long-term fundraising needs.
  • Collaborates with the Chief Mission Advancement Officer in the preparation of annual fundraising projections, including the creation of work plans with targets, objectives and goals for the ministries.
  • Manages Major Gift Officers (MGOs) and ensures that they are actively managing their portfolio to secure gifts that advance archdiocesan and Ministry priorities.
  • Manages a small portfolio of donors and actively solicits and closes gifts of $25,000+ to advance archdiocesan and Ministry priorities. Works closely with AOD, Ministry, and church leadership to effectively, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors toward increased level of giving.
  • Oversee stewardship and donor retention strategies across fundraising vehicles (major gifts, appeals, events and grants).
  • Oversees events staff to ensure appropriate donors are included in various events (fundraisers, stewardship and informational sharing). As needed, support in event planning meetings to ensure that there is seamless coordination from events and major gifts teams.
  • Coordinates with the Director of Campaigns to ensure that MGOs are supporting annual appeal/direct mail efforts.
  • Collaborates with Ministry leaders and Mission Advancement senior staff to develop, create, and edit materials for promoting the work of the AOD and its ministries as needed.
  • In collaboration with the CMAO, develop and manage corporate and foundation relationships.
  • Provide overall oversight for all grant submissions including:
  • Ensure the current grants are managed and that reports are submitted on time with a high degree of quality.
  • Identify new grants for various programs throughout the Archdiocese.

Staff Management

  • Directly supervise Major Gift Officers (currently 3), Events staff (currently 1) and Prospect Researcher (currently 1) development assistant (1) to ensure consistently high performance. Proactively address issues in individual performance including:
  • Staff Performance Planning - Prepares performance and development plans. Continuously review and adjust metrics and other performance-based goals as needed.
  • Ensures consistently high performance of teams by providing direction and coaching as and when needed through formal coaching, as well as regular informal discussions and feedback.
  • Takes responsibility for addressing any performance issues within the teams.
  • Ensures that direct and next-level reports are supported in their professional development, by identifying and addressing collective areas of capacity building and by supporting the implementation of individual development plans.
  • Ensures that managers provide high quality supervision, guidance and coaching to their direct reports, and that they receive necessary support or training to succeed in their roles.
  • In collaboration with the CMAO, assists in crafting an overall department-based and specific ministry-based strategic plans.

Leadership and Coordination

  • Communicates vision, strategy, and specific initiatives internally to executive and other internal stakeholder audiences, as well as externally to donors. This may include representing AOD at key industry events and with donors and influencers.
  • Attends board meetings, events and periodic planning meetings with various ministry partners as needed.
  • Participates in the Mission Advancement Senior Management Team (SMT) meetings and implements departmental and AOD initiatives.
  • Develops deep and meaningful relationships with the various ministry partners of the AOD. Helps troubleshoot issues and provides timely recommendations on how to address concerns.
  • Works with the Director of Campaigns on how annual appeals (ACA, Seminary Appeal, SOH appeal, Colorado Gives Day etc.) will be coordinated by Mission Advancement.
  • In coordination with the Director of Campaigns develop collateral and other brochures for Major Gift Officers relating to ministry concerns and other initiatives and projects around the AOD.

Administrative

  • Prepares regular reports on impact of development efforts to the Chief Mission Advancement Officer, AOD leadership and Ministry leaders.
  • Keeps track of crucial development issues and develops long-term strategies and plans.
  • Helps develop specific training procedures for Major Gift Officers.
  • Approves Expense Request for Direct Reports.
  • Reviews Monthly Dashboards and presents them to ministry leaders each month.
  • Provides annual reviews for direct reports.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelors Degree Required, Advanced Degree preferred (MBA, MPA) or related field.
  • 10+ years successful experience in fundraising, sales or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of managing and leading teams.
