This position is defined as salary (no overtime pay), restricted part time during September through May. Expectation of attendance is for Sunday worship services when the Bell Choir is performing as well as other special services, including (but not limited to) Christmas and Easter. The Bell Choir Director will plan for and run weekly rehearsals with the Bell Choir. The work is done cooperatively with the Director of Music and Worship Arts (Music Director). As a part of the musical leadership team of the church, the Bell Choir Director is expected to advocate for the larger music program.

Job Requirements / Qualifications Desired

1. Minimum one year directing experience
2. Knowledge of Christian worship demonstrating the ability to select appropriate hand-bell music
3. Knowledge of music theory and hand-bell techniques required to perform hand-bell music
4. Knowledge of management principles and coordination of hand-bell choir members and resources
5. Knowledge of principles of training, teaching and instruction for hand-bell players
6. Knowledge of the essence of performance, individual differences in ability, personality and interests; learning and motivation
7. Ability to objectively self-assess and assess performance of hand-bell players
8. The Bell Choir Director will meet with Music Director and other music staff for planning purposes, and is welcome but not required to attend weekly staff meetings

Responsibilities

1. Mentor and encourage the spiritual and musical growth of hand-bell ringers.
2. Select, prepare, and provide appropriate hand bell music for worship services and special services from September to June.
3. Plan, schedule, and arrange details for rehearsals and participation in worship services.
4. Conduct/lead all rehearsals and performances of the hand-bell choir.
5. Contact the Music Director in the event of an unexpected absence.
6. Arrange for substitute ringers when required.

7. Recruit members of all ages for the hand-bell choir.

8. Oversee maintenance of hand-bells, chimes, and equipment.

9. Maintain library of hand-bell music.
10. Supervise movement of any equipment on or off church property.
11. Administer hand-bell funds to purchase music, equipment, and repairs in communication with Music Director.
12. Confer with the Pastor and Music Director on a regular basis to integrate the bell program in planning worship services.

Accountability

The Bell Choir Director is directly accountable to the Music Director, and the Pastor indirectly.

The applicant will be requested to sign forms allowing MVUMC to perform a background check – all results must be favorable. The Accompanist will undergo annual performance reviews.

Responsibilities

1. Serve as a good role model through word, action, and deed, conveying a cooperative spirit among hand-bell ringers. Nurture the musicmaking process to feed mind, body, and soul of listeners as well as players.

2. Support MVUMC’s worship environment through the well-prepared execution of music presented by the choir, other ensembles, and other individual musicians.

3. Encourage and build mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among bell ringers.
4. Rehearse sufficiently to maintain a high quality of music for performance.
5. Seek professional relationships with other church musicians and keep abreast of developments in worship and liturgy through associations, continuing education, professional church publications and workshops.

6. Effectively communicate with staff and hand-bell members.

Salary

Negotiable, consistent with candidate's education, experience, and skill level. This position is a “part- time” employee of the church (averaging 5-8 hours/week, plus special services and occasional extra rehearsals) and has no paid vacation or other benefits.
