Full Job Description
Montview Church is an active, vibrant and creative congregation with century-long leadership in mission, social justice, progressive theology and music in Denver. We embody a unique, distinctive perspective that blends both tradition and contemporary relevance.
Position Description:
Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church currently has two Co-Pastors who, together, serve to equip and empower the congregation for ministry. The model of the co-pastorate at Montview Church calls for a unique role and skill set for the interim period. Because one co-pastor remains active in leadership -- and will remain in leadership through the transition -- many of the customary expectations of an interim pastor are not applicable. In this way the interim co-pastor serves more in a temporary, bridge role rather than traditional interim. Essential qualities of an interim co-pastor in this role include: collaboration, dependability, humility, self-awareness, humor, and a joyful spirit. The necessary skills are a mature Christian faith, compelling preaching, team building, adaptive leadership, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to justice issues.
***The Interim Co-Pastor is not eligible to serve as the future installed Co-Pastor***
Accountability:
The interim Co-Pastor is accountable to the other Co-Pastor, the Session, and the Denver Presbytery.
General Responsibilities of Interim Co-Pastor:
- To work collaboratively and effectively with the other Co-pastor and staff members.
- To provide transitional spiritual leadership for the congregation.
- To provide for the overall well-being and effective functioning of the staff.
- To plan and lead worship, including administration of the sacraments of Holy Baptism and Holy Communion.
- To share equally in strong preaching, with occasional preaching by the Associate Pastors and guest preachers.
- To perform weddings, funerals and memorial services as requested.
- To visit with members of the congregation who are ill, grieving, hospitalized, or in need of pastoral counseling.
- To function as staff liaison to standing committees of Session and other committees as assigned.
- To be involved in the community and in the Denver Presbytery and the larger Presbyterian Church (USA), as needed.
- To meet with the Coordinating Elder to prepare the docket for session meetings.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Master of Divinity
- Minimum of 5+ years of experience in ministry preferably working with a large congregation with a robust multi-staff model.
- Completed first phase of the PC(USA) interim pastor training program, or be willing to start this training with the first three months of hire.
