The Membership Development Manager will work to further the mission, vision, and programs of
First Universalist Church of Denver by leading our membership recruitment and retention efforts.
The successful candidate for this position will help guide our efforts to welcome and engage every person on the continuum from first time visitor to engaged member. The goal is for every person who arrives at our door to be welcomed warmly, meaningfully connected, and invited into the next step on their spiritual journey. This position is responsible for developing and

implementing programs that attract new members and helping to develop and sustain ongoing membership programs. Membership Council volunteers will provide help and support in addressing many of the responsibilities and duties described below.

Qualifications

  • Commitment to our liberal religious values, with a willingness to learn more about Unitarian Universalism in general and First Universalist Church of Denver, and share that knowledge with others.
  • Great people skills, including the ability to work closely with people of all ages.
  • Ability to warmly greet and welcome newcomers, and help others do the same.
  • Ability to work closely with volunteer teams to implement work plans in this program area.
  • Robust knowledge of digital platforms for communication and data management, and willingness and ability to quickly learn new platforms. Key tools include G-Suite, Basecamp, Constant Contact, SimpleChurch CRM, Zoom, and a variety of social media platforms.
  • Knowledge and experience coordinating and planning events.
  • Willingness to work with a variety of staff members on projects of shared concern in a collaborative way.
  • Self-starting attitude and the ability to follow through without direct supervision, and the ability to adjust workflows as conditions change.
  • Ability to discern shortcomings and suggest improvements to help our church better fulfill its mission.
  • No degree is required, but relevant experience or degrees may help distinguish the best candidate.

Responsibilities and Duties

Guide Volunteer Membership Council

  • Lead monthly Membership Council meetings
  • Model and lead a culture of welcoming for all our membership teams
  • Support and lead efforts related to volunteer recruitment for the membership teams
  • Manage Sunday volunteer lists in partnership with lay leaders

Lead Sunday Morning Welcome Team

  • Staff the welcome table to joyfully greet visitors and answer questions
  • Stay at the welcome table for 10-20 minutes after the start of service to greet latecomers and be available to direct people to coffee hour following service.
  • Be available to members who have questions
  • Manage training for ushers, welcome center volunteers, coffee hosts, and ambassadors to better meet the needs of our Sunday worship services
  • Recruit, lead and schedule Sunday volunteers in partnership with lay leaders

Membership Integration

  • Manage Path to Membership class logistics (sign ups, packet, setup)
  • Co-Lead the Path to Membership class, including coordinating with the ministry team and the operations team on specific topics related to membership and the requirements at First Universalist Church of Denver.
  • Support new member Sunday (create script, buy flowers, manage morning ritual, collect and document paperwork)
  • Plan and support new member gatherings
  • Work with the Membership Council, Sunday Volunteers, and Church Staff to help new members find their next connection at First Universalist, including through service on greeting teams, music ministries, religious education, justice efforts, small groups, or other programs of the church
  • Work with zip code leaders who will serve as a conduit as individuals become new members, staying in touch as they get acclimated and until they are participating in church teams or activities

Manage Membership Data

  • Manage Membership Rolls on SimpleChurch
  • Manage clean up of the visitor name tag board and member/friend name tag boards
  • Keep Invitation to Connect form and Membership forms up to date
  • Answer emails from visitors and members about how to get involved
  • Provide member list to Leadership Development Council and Board of Trustees on nominations
  • Manage the annual cleanup of our membership rolls in accordance with the Membership

Policy.

  • Update the UUA database of First Universalist members as needed, including as new members join, and other life transitions occur.
  • Assist in the annual pledge campaign as needed
