The Episcopal Relief and Development collaborated with Action by Churches Together (ACT Alliance) to deliver urgent aid to displaced people after earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria.

According to the Episcopal News Service, the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC) and other local organizations are assisting the ACT Alliance to provide families and local hospitals with shelter, supplies, and support.

MECC is responding to the crisis in Syria by providing shelter for 10,000 families in open-air or structurally sound facilities; assisting children in returning to school to bring about more stability; providing survivors with blankets, hot meals, medicine, and trauma support; and supplying body bags and other necessities to hospitals.

In addition, local organizations are supplying people in Syria with winterization and hygiene packages, monetary transfers, and emotional assistance.

Abagail Nelson, the executive vice-president and chief strategy officer of Episcopal Relief and Development, stated that the organization has been working with the ACT Alliance for over 20 years.

More recently, they have collaborated to support families in Syria who have been impacted by the conflict there. Because of the support of its partners, they have been able to provide aid to people who require it as promptly as possible following the tragic earthquake.

They continue examining the medium and long-term requirements by talking with partners in Turkey and Syria.

As mentioned, more than 39,000 individuals have died in Turkey and Syria due to earthquakes, and thousands of buildings have been demolished or rendered useless.

The combination of the cold weather with the rain and snow makes conditions difficult for those who do not have shelter. It is estimated that 10.9 million individuals in Syria have been impacted by the conflict, of which up to 5.3 million may have been displaced.

The organizations are asking people to keep praying for people who have been impacted by the earthquake that occurred yesterday.
