Newark faithful to pay tribute to fallen first responders, police due to 9/11 attacks, COVID-19

The Archdiocese of Newark will hold its 28th Annual Blue Mass dedicated to uniformed personnel. It will take place on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 10 a.m.

The Newark community will pay tribute to the first responders and police officers during 9/11. It will also be for the uniformed personnel who lost their lives due to coronavirus disease.

The Newark parishioners will honor them at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

28th Annual Blue Mass

According to Jersey Catholic, Cardinal Joseph Tobin will lead the Blue Mass celebration. He is the Archbishop of Newark.

The report said that a large number of law enforcement officers will join the ceremony.

Drummers, bagpipers, and honorary guard units will also participate in the 28th Blue Mass. Federal, state, and county officials are also expected to attend the commemoration event.

Archdiocese Honors Police, First Responders

Jersey Catholic reported that the Archdiocese will honor over 30 uniformed personnel.

These police officers succumbed to death after contracting COVID-19, according to the report.

The Archdiocese will also reportedly commemorate nearly 40 Port Authority officers.

They lost their lives during Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center. This is also in time with the commemoration of the 20th year of the attacks.

The 2021 Blue Mass will also remember the four police officials who died in the line of duty.

The Newark Catholic community will commemorate the life of Officer Sean Peek. He was a member of the Bridgeton Police Department.

The Archdiocese will also acknowledge Jersey City Police Department Detective Joseph Seals.

U.S. Capitol Officer Brian Sicknick and Port Authority Officer Michael Teel will be honored.

The Archdiocese will also give tribute to those who passed away after their retirement.

'We'll Never Forget Them'

Jersey Catholic spoke with Chief Christopher Trucillo. He is an official from the NJ Transit Police Department.

Trucillo bared that they will never forget those police officers who died on duty. The police chief is also the 2021 Blue Mass honorary chairman.

"We in law enforcement always pledge that when we lose somebody, we'll never forget them," he said.

Trucillo added, "But those words are empty unless we actively do things that will allow us to never forget."

Chief Trucillo reiterated that the Blue Mass celebration serves as a way to "fulfill that pledge."

The police chief also stressed that it is an honor for him to be part of the law enforcement. 

According to him, it was a privilege to remember "those who made the ultimate sacrifice."

According to its website, the Cathedral Basilica is located at 89 Ridge Street in Newark.

Moreover, the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart serves as the seat of Cardinal Tobin.

The Newark parishioners also consider the Cathedral as the Archdiocesan Mother Church.

The Cathedral Basilica is the heart of the Catholic Christian communities in the Archdiocese.

In addition, the report said that it accepts all Catholics in the congregation. The Cathedral also spearheads the ordination of priests and deacons.
