An Episcopal church in New York City has been granted additional funding for its restoration plans.

St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery will reportedly receive $35,000 from The New York Landmarks Conservancy.

This has become possible through the Sacred Sites grant. As mentioned, it is a classification that oversees the distribution of funds to historic religious properties.

St. Mark's Church is reportedly regarded as one of the earliest places of worship in New York City.

Church to Acquire Funding

According to Bowery Boogie, Robert "Bob" Wilson's Estate initiated the grant for the church.

Wilson was a patron of the Sacred Sites program of the Conservancy. He also contributed to the preservation of New York's historic sacred architecture and arts.

Conservancy President Peg Breen expressed her gratitude and appreciation to Wilson.

"We're deeply appreciative to Bob Wilson and his passion and commitment to our Sacred Sites program," Breen said.

The Conservancy president shared that Wilson "singularly supported" the cause for several years. Furthermore, Breen reiterated that the organization will always be thankful for the patron's generosity.

Church's Additional Funding For Restoration Efforts

As previously stated, the funds from the Sacred Sites grant would be used for building restorations.

The report said that the church needs at least half a million dollars to restore its facilities. St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery reportedly targets to repair its built-in copper gutters.

According to the report, the church's copper gutters have been leaking for a long time. In fact, it already created massive damage to the sanctuary of St. Mark's Church.

The sanctuary has been used for worship services and public gatherings. Apart from that, people also utilize the place for public performances.

Sacred Sites Fund Grant Criteria

As per the Conservancy's requirement, the Sacred Sites programs prioritize "essential repairs."

The Conservancy reportedly assists the restoration projects of primary worship places in the state. Furthermore, projects such as roofing and sewage repairs receive the highest priority for the grant.

Repointing and restoration of masonry, internal and external repairs are also highly considered.

"NYLC Sacred Sites grants may be considered for barrier-free access design or construction," the website read.

The Conservancy's Advocacy

According to its website, the Conservancy is an advocate for preservation laws and policies. The New York-based organization stressed that it has a "powerful impact" on the state.

The Conservancy pointed out that its preservation policies influence "landmarking, planning, and development." The organization also stated that this had impacted the state's tourism and economic condition.

Apart from that, the Conservancy claimed that its policies had improved people's quality of life.
