The report revealed that St. Stan's School also held a fundraising project for the veterans.

Dubbed as "Flag for Heroes," the initiative reportedly strived to raise funds to honor them.

As reported, that was the first-ever 'Flag for Heroes' fundraiser of the Sayreville-based Catholic school. Families who participated in the event have donated to the cause and sponsored a flag.

Accordingly, those flags were reportedly dedicated to retired and active members of the military.

The fundraiser also paid tribute to the members of the emergency medical services (EMS). Aside from the first responders, the Sayreville residents also honored the front-line workers.

St. Stan's school head reiterated that the event "was just another way to pay tribute."

"And I just think it came out beautifully, we are so happy," said Hodder during the event.

The news outlet reported that the flags will remain at St. Stan's School until Saturday, Dec. 18.

Furthermore, every family who sponsored a flag will have an opportunity to bring one home. The principal shared that St. Stan's School hoisted the flags on Saturday morning, Nov. 6.

Hodder said that they put the flags together and set them out. They also reportedly placed lights on the flags.

She attested that she was moved upon seeing the hoisted flags waving outside the school.

"They were waving in the wind, and people were actually pulling in and looking at the flags," Hodder added.

According to the school principal, the public also read the inscription on the placards.

Based on the report, she disclosed that people expressed how beautiful the flags were.

St. Stan's School reportedly celebrated Veterans Day in the same manner as the Sayreville town. The school principal emphasized that she considers Sayreville to be a "very patriotic" town.

History of Veterans Day

As per the National Today's website, Veterans Day was previously known as Armistice Day.

Former President Woodrow Wilson declared Nov. 11, 1919, as the Armistice Day celebration. This was crafted a year after the conclusion of World War I to pay tribute to fallen soldiers.

Congress, in 1926, then created a resolution about Armistice Day. The resolution reportedly urged former President Calvin Coolidge to make the celebration a legal holiday.

WW II veteran Raymond Weeks, meanwhile, proposed an expanded Armistice Day. He said that all veterans must be remembered and not just those who died in WW I.

Moreover, the 83rd U.S. Congress created an amendment to the Act of 1938. Lawmakers removed the word "Armistice" and replaced it with "Veterans" instead.
