Church of St. Joseph in Greenwich Village

Based on its website, as the Greenwich Village transitioned from a rural area outside of New York City to a city suburb in the 1820s, its rural characteristics vanished as new buildings grew to accommodate its expanding population.

Thus the Church of St. Joseph in Greenwich Village was founded in 1929 by Bishop John Dubois to serve the emerging district of Greenwich Village.

The parish utilized a temporary chapel until a new church building could be constructed. The construction of a permanent structure began on June 10, 1833.

John Doran established the Church in the 1830s' fashionable architectural style, Greek Revival.

St. Joseph Church is an excellent example of New York Greek Revival architecture from the era; yet, few other examples survive today.

As reported, the Catholic Church was not founded in New York City until the end of the American Revolution.

During its time as a British colony, New York City prohibited the practice of Catholicism; it was unlawful for a Catholic priest to even enter the city.

The first New york City-based Catholic church was St. Peter's on Barclay St. and was followed by other churches around the state.
