Recognizing that our families are the source of evangelization and that within our families, we learn how to relate with others and to trust and to love, the Secretary for Laity, Family and Life brings forth the opportunities for all people engaged in the Church to learn about God and develop our understanding of right and wrong. Through various ministries, the well-being of society is promoted through the structure of growing healthy families, committed marriages and responsible parenting. The Secretary promotes pastoral ministries and apostolates aimed at supporting families and the defense of human life. The Secretary assures the apostolate of the laity thrives through their participation in the life and mission of the church, both as individuals and through organizations and movements. The Secretary for Laity, Family and Life is a member of the bishop’s executive committee.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Oversees pastoral ministries and apostolates aimed at supporting families, such as Sacramental marriage preparation, after marriage retreats, workshops on marriage and parenting, etc.
Acts as a liaison and support for the development of Campus Ministry programs, including University of Central Florida, Stetson University, Rollins College, Florida Institute of Technology and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Oversees and ensures quality Catechumenate, Full Communion and Adult Faith Formation processes.
Responsible for development and growth of pastoral care programs to include bereavement and ministry formation.
Prescribes to the promotion of Natural Family Planning and the understanding of sexuality within the context of marriage.
Advocates for life from conception through natural death through collaborative programming with Catholic Charities of Central Florida Culture of Life Office for all ages.
Knows and follows the tenets of the National Directory for Catechesis.
Promotes and fosters formation of lay leadership through educational development programs.
Manages the Associations of the Faithful within the Diocese of Orlando.
Collaborates with the Secretary for Education to assure all are taught in accord with the General Principals for Sacramental Catechesis as set forth in the National Director for Catechesis.
Collaborates with all Secretariat Heads to assure coordination of all endeavors to flourish the Body of Christ as a Eucharisticpeople.
Collaborates with other Church leaders in service of the mission of the Diocese of Orlando.
Manages staff with a focus on Christ, bringing forth the Diocesan core values to encourage individual and team growth.
Works cooperatively with various personalities within the Catholic Church, facilitates good communication and is responsive to requests of others within a large, complex and diverse working environment.
Participates in leadership committees as appropriate.
Oversees the preparation of the annual budget.

The Secretary for Laity, Family and Life is responsible for Marriage & Family Ministry Director, Adult Ministry Director, Administrative Assistant to the Secretary for Laity, Family and Life and Administrative Assistant to Haitian Ministry.

Requirements:
Catholic Faith

Practice of the Catholic faith is required. Church employees must conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with and supportive of the mission and purpose of the Church. Their public behavior must not violate the faith, morals or laws of the Church or the policies of the diocese.

Education and Experience

Master’s Degree or PH.D. in Theology. Five years relative experience working in parish ministry or a Catholic diocese. Previous experience working with multi-disciplined, multi-cultural staff. Requires excellent written and oral communication skills. Bilingual in Spanish and English a plus.

Working Conditions

The working hours of this position are not limited to an 8-hour day. This person will need to be available in the evening and weekends, as needed. Must be willing to work in conditions of stress and function well under pressure.
