Position Overview

The Director of Music is a professional who holds specialized experience in music and is responsible for the effective planning, coordination, and execution of music within the liturgical celebrations of St. Mary of the Angels Episcopal Church in a way that assists the assembled believers in expressing and sharing their faith.

Key Responsibilities (including, but not limited to the following):

  • Work as a team member with the Rector and staff in the ongoing mission and ministry of the parish.
  • Oversee Church Choir and Musician development and rehearsals.
  • Work with the Rector to plan and develop the musical elements of worship for all Sundays, and any other occasions as negotiated with the Rector. This includes choosing hymns, anthems, and songs of praise.
  • Plan Sunday music three months ahead, with flexibility to edit selections as needed.
  • Introduce new music as is appropriate to keep our worship services fresh, as well as familiar.
  • Ensure our 10am Sunday worship service has the musical, artistic, and technical support it needs.
  • Be willing to be contracted for weddings and funerals, as negotiated by the Rector, and arrange a substitute in the event of a lack of availability.
  • Recruit, schedule, and coordinate guest musicians for special services such as Christmas and Easter.
  • Formulate and oversee the annual Music Budget.
  • With the assistance of other parish volunteers, manage fundraising for financial needs outside of budgeted needs.
  • Any other duties as assigned by – and negotiated with – the Rector.

Qualifications for Employment

  • Must have a firm, faithful, and ever-growing personal relationship with Jesus.
  • Accomplished musician (pianist, guitarist) and the ability to sight-read almost anything. St. Mary’s currently has a part-time organist, so the ability to play the organ is not necessary.
  • A love for the full range of both traditional and contemporary music, sacramental worship, and liturgy.
  • Willingness to work as a team member with the Rector, parish staff, and other leaders in leading the worship of this parish.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize workload and multitask to meet demands.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Details of Employment

  • Position is part-time.
  • Compensation is negotiable based upon education and experience and will be reviewed at the end of each calendar year.
  • Two weeks’ paid vacation per year (with a maximum of two Sundays away) to be scheduled in negotiation with the Rector. Additional time may be taken if arranged well in advance.
