COMMUNICATIONS ASSISTANT


The Communications Assistant reports directly to the Chief Communications Officer (CCO) for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. This individual works in direct support of the CCO as well as the two offices comprising the Secretariat for Communications (SFC), the Office for Communications and Catholic Philly, the digital news agency of the archdiocese.

The SFC is one of the region's most fast paced and active communications operations. Using traditional and new media, the SFC communicates the work and initiatives of the Archbishop, departments, agencies, parishes and schools of the Archdiocese with internal and external stakeholders.

This position is ideal for an entry-level candidate. A Bachelor's Degree is required, and education and/or internship experience in the fields of communications, public relations, and/or journalism is preferred. Strong computers skills are necessary and proficient knowledge and use of the Microsoft Office suite is essential. Experience with video production and editing software such as Adobe Creative Cloud and Canva is a plus. Successful candidates need to be team oriented and demonstrate the ability to work in a rapid pace work environment with excellent written and verbal communication skills.


Essential duties and responsibilities:


  • Facilitate incoming calls and email inquiries from the news media and the general public.
  • Daily monitoring of news coverage through OFC's media monitoring software as well as daily and quarterly news compilation report to be sent to administrators. Assist with electronic and hard copy monthly mailings.
  • Maintain various Archdiocesan webpages, the digital version of the official Archdiocesan Catholic Directory, and the OFC's media distribution list.
  • Draft press releases and media advisories for distribution through various channels
  • Assist social media coordinator with draft content, on an as needed basis, for the social media platforms managed by the OFC (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) including development of copy, graphics, and photo/video (where applicable) for posting.
  • Assist with special projects and events.
  • Provide direct clerical support for the Chief Communications Officer. Modes of support include researching, office billing, purchasing, and filing for SFC, among other tasks.
  • Serve as the production assistant for film and podcasts produced by the SFC.
  • Additional responsibilities include assisting Catholic Philly's Digital Content Manager with drafting listicles and other short-form content as well as digital media projects and social media as needed.
