General Description

The Coordinator/Director of Elementary Religious Education is a leader who assists children of the parish in their faith formation. The C/DRE is a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church. The C/DRE must accept and be committed to the teachings of the Catholic Church as they are promulgated in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia under the authority of the Archbishop of Philadelphia.

Requirements

  • Requires educational background in Theology/Religious Education (or related field)
  • Proficient computer skills to maintain databases, perform word processing, outlook functions, internet skills and parish data systems skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters
  • Ability to collaborate with parish and school staff
  • Friendly and appropriate communication skills
  • Ability to organize work effectively and to set priorities

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Oversee and direct the Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) from Level 1-6. The program is a family-oriented model that begins with children attending an intensive week (8:15 a.m.-2:45 p.m.) in June and 5 Sunday's throughout the year (10:00 a.m. -11:15 a.m.). During the Sunday sessions, speakers are brought in to talk to parents. In lieu of the in-person formation during the pandemic, we have opted for faith-based webinars. In addition, families participate in 6 spiritual and 6 service activities throughout the year.
  • Plan and implement Sacrament Programs, including Catechesis, Retreats and Service Projects, for all parish children seeking the Sacrament of Confirmation (7th grade and older) and the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist (2nd grade and older).
  • Communicate, by monthly newsletter and email, with the families of the children in PREP and Sacrament Programs.
  • Select formational materials, including textbooks, in accordance with Archdiocesan guidelines.
  • Recruit, train and supervise catechists and other volunteers.
  • Under the guidance of the pastor and business manager, maintain the financial records for the PREP
  • Maintain records for PREP including sacramental records and registration records
  • Implement of the Safe Environment Program, including securing clearances for catechists and volunteers
  • Under the guidance of the Pastor, oversee and direct all sacramental preparation for First Penance, Holy Eucharist and Confirmation
  • Participate in meetings and events sponsored by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
