Director of Facilities Management

Summary: This position is critical to the fulfillment of the mission of Saint Laurence Parish. It supports the stewardship of the resources and goods of the parish and school. This enables the parish vision to be made concrete and real in the everyday usage of the properties and campus. The ideal candidate will have a disciple's heart, a commitment to the mission of the Catholic Church, and view his/her role as a ministry supporting the mission.


Reports to: Pastor (some direction from school Principal as required)

Supervises: Sacristan and parish volunteers related to repairs and grounds maintenance


FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Full-Time (35 hours per week)

  • "On-call' support (in case of emergencies) with flex-time/ability to work nights and weekends.

Duties and Responsibilities

Maintenance

Assure the parish buildings, equipment, and grounds are maintained appropriately and safely through a program of planned and preventative maintenance and repairs.

  • Operational: checks of lighting, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry, appliances, and HVAC systems of all buildings.
  • Minor repairs: including but not limited to lighting, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry and immediate temporary repairs in an emergency.
  • Vendor management: coordinate the scheduling, negotiation, periodic rebidding, and monitoring of contracted services and/or volunteers for grounds keeping, pest control, custodial, and any other maintenance-related services.

Safety & Security

  • Weekly safety checks including but not limited to "walk-around" inspection of buildings, outside grounds and parking lot, condition of sidewalks in bad weather, potential hazards due to broken cement, etc.; being aware of seasonal needs of salt and snow removal.
  • Familiarity with local codes and standards; coordination of inspections and maintenance of safety notifications of fire extinguishers, fire alarms, sprinkler systems, and emergency back-up lighting.
  • Oversee parish compliance with OSHA requirements.

Custodial

  • Coordination of cleaning of facilities with staff & volunteers.
  • As needed cleaning of school during school days.
  • Keep storage, service, supply, and machine areas cleaned and organized.

Facilities Management

  • Assign and oversee work of other maintenance personnel and volunteers as required.
  • Coordinate leasing/scheduling and use of parish facilities by internal and external organizations w/ parish and school staff.
  • Ensure set-up, preparation of, breakdown, and cleaning of facilities with volunteers and/or staff for parish groups and ministries.
  • Oversee security of the parish facilities during events including key control, facilities opening and closing, and operation of any relevant security systems.

Other

  • Oversee the acquisition of and maintain proper inventory levels of supplies and equipment, including online purchasing (ex. Amazon, standing orders, etc.).
  • Under the supervision of the Pastor and the parish Finance Council, coordinate a team of parish members who can volunteer their services & expertise in stewardship of projects and long-term goals.
  • Seasonal (Advent-Christmas, Lent-Easter) and ongoing support for liturgical and church activities.
  • Attend periodic staff meetings and annual staff spiritual retreat with ongoing mission-related activities.


Position Specifications (Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities)

  • 3+ years of hands on facilities maintenance experience desired.
  • Knowledge of procedures, practices, tools, and equipment used in maintenance.
  • Ability to perform minor lighting, plumbing, heating, electrical, carpentry, and/or masonry work.
  • Proficiency in the use of the latest technology necessary to oversee campus security, safety, and comfort (doors, cameras, lighting, HVAC, and corresponding use of "apps").
  • Ability to schedule and oversee outside contractor's progress on planned projects.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision and within a team environment.
  • Highly organized planner with both oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to make judgments related to emergency and safety matters.
  • Ability to work in a school environment to meet the needs of students and teachers.
  • Ability to communicate in both English and Spanish is required; stronger fluency is greatly preferred.
