Summary of the Position:
We seek a talented and passionate person who can serve as the Music Director. We are a vibrant university Parish founded in 1850 with a large young population and diverse communities. Part of the Parish is the Newman Center (first in the country), which serves both UPenn and Drexel universities. Our congregation is blessed with many musically talented persons who need guidance and leadership. This job is part-time and seasonal. The low season is mid-May through August, mid-December through mid-January, and the high season is Lent and Holy Week. The Music Director reports directly to the Pastor.
Essential Responsibilities of the Position:1. Lead and grow the music ministry in the parish:
- Train musicians to lead the Sunday Masses, including pianists, cantors, choir members, and instrumentalists.
- Attend 3 of 4 of the Sunday Masses (9 am, 11:30 am, 5:30 pm) and Holy Days of Obligation.
- Play piano for Masses that do not have a scheduled pianist
- Play piano or lead the choir in communion meditation at one Sunday Mass weekly.
- Select and oversee music for other parish events: Easter Triduum, Carols by Candlelight, and Marian Procession.
- Lead weekly rehearsals (suggested Sundays 2:00-3:00 pm) for all musicians and some personal accompaniment.
- Plan the music selection with Pastor
- Work closely with the music coordinator to assess musicians for proper scheduling. (The music coordinator will schedule and coordinate with volunteers).
- Oversee the maintenance and tuning of the parish's instruments and sound system within an approved budget.
2. Foster community amongst the members - Coordinate communal and appreciation sessions
Position Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, the person must be able to: play the piano, sing, have choir conducting ability, leadership skills, social skills, and love worship.
It required: Compliance with background checks and completion of the VIRTUS program.
Education & Experience: College degree. A minimum of 1-year of parish music experience or similar experience is required.
Terms: Part-time, on average 15 Hrs /week (mainly all Sunday). Less when not on "peak season," more towards Lent and Holy Week.
Salary: $20,000 /year
