Description:
The sexton coordinates the staff, liturgical ministers, and others to optimize “the Sunday experience.” Competent and confident liturgical ministers, a clean and organized church, and friendly and helpful door greeters are marks of success.
Primary Responsibilities
- Train, schedule, and supervise liturgical ministers (altar servers, Communion ministers, lectors, sacristans, and ushers/greeters) directly or through delegates
- Prepare for special liturgies (e.g., baptisms, “extras” at Sunday Masses like blessings)
- Lead RCIA liturgies (“breaking open the word,” scrutinies & Easter Vigil Part III)
- Lead baptism preparation
- Meet and orient new parishioners
- Prepare universal prayer
- Prepare altar announcements
- Order liturgical supplies
- Maintain vestibule
- Prepare pews with inserts (e.g., prayer cards, pledge cards)
- Fields plant problems to facilities staff, others
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must be a practicing Catholic in good standing
- Must possess some certifications in liturgical ministries, lay ministry, etc.
Hours
These hours are offered only as a guideline for those considering this position.
- Friday, 9-4 PM
- Saturday, 3-6 PM
- Sunday, 8 AM-2 PM
- Occasionally, a couple of hours may be required on other weekdays
