Local churches in San Diego are stepping up to help Ukrainians find refuge. Calvary San Diego works so Ukrainian refugees can settle in the Southern San Diego area. The church provides transportation, supplies, and housing for these people escaping the war and flooding the border for asylum.
Ukrainian Refugees, San Diego
Calvary Church San Diego is welcoming Ukrainian refugees. According to KUSI, the church helps them reconnect with families and friends across the U.S.
The work is a 24-hour operation for Calvary Church in San Diego. This effort is making the congregation busy. Calvary Church San Diego has helped fifteen hundred families since last Friday.
As heard from the report, dozens of Ukrainians arrived at the church. With the help of volunteers, Ukrainians reached Mexico and crossed the border to the United States.
Calvary Church San Diego welcomed the refugees with open arms.
The church provides them with water, food, and blankets. Moreover, it also provides transportation from the border to its sanctuary.
Phil Metzger, the Senior Pastor at Calvary Church San Diego, was a former missionary and church planter in Hungary and Russia for 20 years. The pastor considers Ukraine his neighborhood.
As heard from the report of KUSI, Pastor Phil feels a strong connection with this part of the world. Such connection further motivated him to engage in this cause. Other members of the congregation welcome Ukrainian refugees to their homes.
Calvary Church, Humanitarian Effort
The church launched the Ukraine Relief program through its website. Calvary San Diego is grateful to everyone who helps them serve Ukraine refugees coming into the United States through the Mexican border.
As shared on the church’s webpage, it assists Ukrainian refugees by bringing them to Calvary San Diego. They get a safe place to eat, rest, shower, and get support for the next part of their journey.
Other refugees would be staying longer in San Diego. This one is why Calvary Church San Diego is placing them in host homes.
Through its Ukraine Relief program, the church provides opportunities for everyone to help. People can support this great cause by donating money or supplies.
Calvary Church San Diego also welcomes volunteers to help with their operation.
Volunteers may sign up for transportation or communication efforts. Anyone joining the team will help pick up refugees from the U.S. side of the border and drop them off at the church or San Diego airport.
Additionally, they are also assigned to drive Ukrainian refugees from Calvary Church San Diego to the airport. They may also drive for picking up people from the Tijuana Airport and dropping them off at border crossings.
Other volunteers who can speak the Russian/Ukrainian language can work as translators.
Families may also volunteer to accommodate refugees for one to two days. Another option for volunteers is to be part of The Hub. It welcomes refugees upon their arrival.
Volunteers will assist families, accept donations, and help with organizing or preparing food.
