As First Lutheran Church is in the heart of the city of San Diego, they are providing a weekly Bread Day and now collaborating with the Third Avenue Charitable Organization (TACO) to expand their ministry for the people at-risk in the area.
The church's Social Ministry section posted that for more than 40 years, the church has sponsored Bread days. They serve bread and coffee to the individuals working in the city. Then as of now, they are also serving meals to vulnerable people in the neighborhood twice a week.
The website quoted the statement from Pope Francis that genuine faith makes people more charitable and merciful. He added that having true faith is being more honest and humane. It makes people view others not as an enemy to overcome but as siblings to be loved, served, and helped.
Expansion of the Ministry
According to the same webpage, the said ministry expanded in 1997. The church now included free medical and dental checkups. They also offer legal acupuncture and eye clinics. At the same time, they also give health consultation services on church grounds.
TACO, a non-profit organization, organized these outreach initiatives. The church mentioned that they continue to strive today. The church is dedicated to serving its local community.
TACO: Supporting dignity, health, well-being
TACO’s website aims to support the dignity, health, and well-being of individuals suffering homelessness and poverty. They said that they are a community working together to achieve their purpose.
Moreover, they noted that they serve everyone regardless of race, gender, faith, and age. They also welcome everyone despite their sexual orientation. A considerable number of those they have helped are without permanent housing or are living on the streets. Others are of retirement age and living in the neighborhood of senior citizen residential towers with a low fixed salary.
Meanwhile, the website added that other people they have assisted are physically disabled. They live on relatively small wages from sources such as state disability and Federal SSI. Besides, during the week, most of TACO’s clients are primarily homeless men, while single women also take advantage of the programs offered by TACO. They said that sometimes, families living on the streets receive assistance from the organization.
Meals for The Vulnerable
As part of their efforts, the group provides two weekly meals in partnership with businesses, churches, friends, and neighbors. They posted that most of this food goes to San Diego’s most vulnerable citizens.
Their Meals section stated that they give out free meals every Monday at 4 p.m. and Friday at 9 p.m. They prepare hot entrée, fresh fruits, and vegetables. They also give bread, pastries, homemade soup, juice, and coffee.
The webpage said that at every meal, they have a minimum of 18 volunteers to prepare, serve, and clean up. These volunteers include congratulations from First Lutheran Church and friends of TACO. They highlighted that the organization’s services are genuinely community-sponsored. They develop those who are served and those who do.
The organization expressed gratitude to the restaurants and supporters who donated food served at the free meals program.
