Journey Community Church opens the Twice Treasured Thrift Store for donations every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The church’s website mentioned that all the profit from the store would proceed to various mission initiatives, local and global. As further noted, the majority of the workers at the store are volunteers.
The volunteers prepared a bin in front of the store for members bringing their donations.
Moreover, the church advised members not to give stained or broken zipper apparel. They added that they shouldn't donate underwear and mattresses unless they are new.
Journey Community Church stated that the store would not accept infant car seats or large appliances like fridges or washers. Televisions older than 2000 and landlines are also not accepted as posted on the website.
Call for Volunteers
According to the church’s thrift store section, they need volunteers from Monday to Saturday. They added that members could help once a week or more. The church encouraged its congregation to volunteer as it gave inspiration to its community.
The website emphasized that helping in the store could also change people’s lives. They said church members could also be involved in local and global missions.
As further noted, volunteers could have fun testing stuff like battery-operated games or toys. The store announced they are looking for cashiers for the morning and afternoon shifts.
They informed members that the schedule would start from 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Then they could take the afternoon shift from 2 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.
Local, Global Impact
According to the local and community section, the Journey Community Church desires to reach out to people by feeding and clothing them. They added that they want individuals to recover through their services.
The church members also clean local parks and work with global communities. They said they partner with Carrefour in Haiti and Tecate in Mexico.
Poverty in Haiti
The Counter Currents's website revealed that Carrefour is one of the poorest districts of Port-au Prince. It is the capital of Haiti, where many people live. They noted that Souray is the most disadvantaged but has the potential to earn because of its beaches.
As further emphasized, families living in the area receive less than one US dollar daily. They added that people are suffering from malnutrition. Another problem they face is that they do not have sufficient water and primary health care, as the website noted.
Besides, they emphasized that few children can afford to go to school, so they have little opportunity. For this reason, there is a greater danger of being a prostitute or a criminal offender, as the website stated.
Moreover, the website explains that most women sell on the street. As further mentioned, they earn a small amount by selling fish or fruit. They said their income is insufficient to buy food for their children.
The same website stressed that they do not have a decent public market in Carrefour. They noted that district police arrest vendors for not having a permit.
They said that the sellers could not afford to get a legal license.
