Mission Hills United Methodist Church (UMC) celebrated World’s Mental Health Day on Monday, Oct. 10.

The church’s Facebook post highlighted what Jesus said about life.

Mental Health

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) said that the World Health Organization (WHO) defined mental health as a state of well-being in which a person acknowledges their abilities. They explained that being mentally fit is having the ability to deal with everyday stresses in life.

Also, the website noted that people in good mental condition could work efficiently.  They could also take part in their community.

Mental Disorders

However, the same website defined mental disorders and other related illnesses. They explained that people with mental disorders could have mental disabilities. They could also experience premature mortality.

PAHO emphasized that countries have designated insufficient effort to discuss these concerns. They added that the resources are unequally distributed and ineffectively used.

Those affected are being isolated in social events. They are discriminated against, as further exposed on the website.

They mentioned that the risk for other illnesses increases due to mental health disorders. It could also be the cause of some unintentional and intentional injury, as stated on the website.

Launching World Mental Health

The WHO website revealed that it established the WHO Special Initiative for Mental Health (2019-2023). It is focused on Universal Health Coverage for Mental Health.

They said their effort guarantees quality and affordable care for those with mental conditions.

As further explained, WHO needs to invest in increasing on all fronts. They want to help people understand mental health's value and lessen the stigma.

They added that they needed more support for their research to learn new therapies.  They could also develop existing treatments for all mental illnesses through these supports.

More importantly, WHO desires to provide affordable care in 12 priority nations. As revealed on the website, they want to expand their efforts to 100 million more individuals.

WHO Response

In another section, the WHO highlighted working with the Member States. They also partner with other organizations to develop the mental health of people in society. The website noted that they are promoting mental well-being and preventing mental illness.

In their response, the WHO also said that they are making initiatives to improve quality health care accessibly. The website explains that they want to provide a treatment that still honors human rights.

Moreover, the organization also said that its programs cover normative activities that the country supports. They emphasized that they have assisted and expanded mental health care in over 110 nations.

Besides, the website stated that they have programs that deal with HIV and gender-based abuse. The organization added that they also have help in preventing people from committing suicide.

WHO also emphasized that they have developed programs for mental health in the workforce and advocate the quality of care and rights of individuals.

More importantly, the organization helped innovate psychological interventions, as added on the website. They mentioned that the WHO included digital methods to deal with mental health in the workplace.
