To be part of Safety Awareness Month this June, the Metropolitan Community Church holds a one-day Adult&Pediatric CPR and First Aid class on June 12 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The church announced in its newsletter that this class could help members gain confidence. So they could help someone in a medical emergency and possibly save a life. There would be $50 for the Red Cross Certification and $15 for everyone who wishes to participate.
“Take time to learn First Aid and CPR. It saves lives, and it works, "says Bobby Sherman
Week One: Medical Emergencies
According to Jessie Black, a medical emergency can occur anywhere, anytime, without heads-ups. A few instances include a car accident, heart attack, a fall, stroke, and choking. He emphasized that these incidents can be fatal if not treated as soon as possible. He asked if people could recognize the signs of a stroke or heart attack.
Black also asked members if they could help someone who was choking or if they knew how to navigate an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). He even questioned if members knew how to stop severe bleeding or handle an injured arm or leg. Lastly, he asked if people know how to simply give comfort and security to an injured person while waiting for professional help.
Besides, Black stated that he had a call from his student in his Wilderness First Aid Class. He shared that the knowledge and skills he acquired from the lessons allowed him to confidently help a woman at a grocery store who had a heart attack. Black added that knowing what you can do, whether hiking in the mountains or shopping, can mean the difference between life and death.
The said newsletter also revealed that every house, car, workplace, or meeting place should have a first aid kit. The kit includes elastic bandages, antibiotic cream, antiseptic wipes, aspirin, etc. Black noted that suitable kits also have gloves, a CPR pocket mask, tweezers, and cotton swabs. This kid also has burn cream, gauze pads, roller bandages, and at least one triangular bandage.
They added that more comprehensive kits also include scissors, thermometers, cold packs, and different kinds of dressings. They said kits with tourniquets, eye washes, and other supplies for more specific hazards to that location are needed for higher-risk environments.
June, National Safety Month
The National Safety Council website revealed that for more than 25 years, National Safety Month (NSM) has given weekly resources. So they could emphasize the leading causes of preventable injury and death so individuals can live their entire lives.
They noted that NSM is a yearly event to observe to help people stay safe in the workplace anywhere.
Moreover, the National Safety Council (NSC) said it is America’s leading nonprofit safety campaign. It has been for over 100 years, the website added. They mentioned that they were a mission-based group. They focus on removing the leading causes of preventable death so humans can live freely. They also concentrate their initiatives where they can have the most significant influence. These places include workplaces, roadways, and impairments.
