Archdiocese of San Francisco with McGrath Institute launch Conversations at the Crossroads of Science and Human Dignity

Working together with McGrath Institute’s Science and Religion Initiative, the Archdiocese of San Francisco will hold Conversations That Matter - The Crossroads of Science and Human Dignity. 

Conversations That Matter

According to the Archdiocese of San Francisco events page, they will be working with McGrath Institute’s Science and Religion Initiative to conduct another session of Conversations That Matter.

In addition, the post also stated that the virtual event would happen on Oct. 27 at 5:00 P.M. The session of Conversations That Matter will focus on talk about crossroads of science and human dignity.

The post also mentioned that the session is aptly titled, Questioning Gender: Medicine and Theology in Dialogue. The event will feature guest speakers, George Fox University Dean of Humanities, Abigail Favale, The National Catholic Bioethics Center Director of Education, Fr. Tad Pacholczyk, and Washington University School of Medicine Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Paul Hruz.

Additionally, the post said that the session would begin with a 10-minute presentation from each panelist, followed by live Q&A. Participants are encouraged to submit questions in advance using this link

Event Panelist

According to the McGrath Institute for Church Life page, one of the panelists for the event is Professor Abigail Favale. She is George Fox University’s Dean of Humanities, where she also offers great-books courses. Her work has been featured in The Atlantic, Church Life, First Things, and several creative and educational magazines.

The post also mentioned that Abigail has a feminist and gender theory foundation, and her most recent book, The Genesis of Gender, will be published by Ignatius Press in early 2022. Abigail, her partner, and their four children live in Oregon.

Meanwhile, according to the same post, The National Catholic Bioethics Center in Philadelphia currently employs Rev. Tadeusz Pacholczyk, Ph.D., as the Director of Education. Fr. Tad is a pastor in the Fall River Diocese in Massachusetts. He is a prolific writer and speaker on bioethics and medical ethics.

Since 2001, Fr. Tad has taught bioethics courses to seminarians at Boston's St. John's Seminary, Weston's Pope St. John XXIII Seminary, Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Connecticut, St. Louis' Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, Philadelphia's St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, and Washington, D.C.'s Catholic University of America, as per the same post.

The post continued to say that Fr. Tad spent five years in Rome, studying at Gregorian and Lateran Universities. He was assigned to the Fetal Tissue Research Ethics Advisory Board of the National Institutes of Health in 2020.

Lastly, the post mentioned that Paul W. Hruz, M.D., Ph.D., is a senior physician-scientist and academic pediatric endocrinologist (hormone expert) with academic affiliations in Pediatrics and Cellular Biology and Physiology who will also serve as a panelist.

The post also said that Dr. Hruz has more than 20 years of professional expertise in treating children with sexual development issues. He is a contributing writer to his University's Research Ethics program for graduate students and has gained certification in Healthcare Ethics. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed publications, scholarly reviews, and book chapters. He has reared his five children in St Louis with his spouse Anne.
