On Wednesday, March 8, recognized as International Women's Day (IWD), San Francisco Zion Church visited McKinley Park's Rose Garden located in East Sacramento and handed out flowers to women.

Sacramento Women

According to ABC10, Melina Cesarini and Greta Minasayan, both from Sacramento and members of the church, picked up flower bouquets in purple, green, and white from the nearby Trader Joe's.

They distributed the flowers to women and mothers, particularly those who may feel disregarded or overlooked.

Cesarini explained that these colors symbolize International Women's Day.

They also brought along some cards to go with the flowers

Cesarini and Minasayan embarked on a mission to interact with women and mothers in the community, whom they had not met before, and express their appreciation.

When they approached these women, many were taken aback but were willing to share their experiences about motherhood.

Receivers also expressed their gratitude towards the women who played a motherly role in their lives.

Cesarini explained that their purpose was to give back to the community and honor the women they have in their lives by spreading positivity and expressing gratitude.

Although women should be appreciated every day, they wanted to give them extra love on this special day.

The theme for this year's IWD is #EmbraceEquity, which highlights the importance of inclusivity, diversity, equal opportunities, and creating a sense of belonging in society.

Cesarini and Minasayan focused on ensuring that the women they met felt loved and included.

Cesarini expressed her gratitude to all women, and she also urged those who are not women to show love and support towards them not just on this day but every day.

Embrace Equity

On IWD, the focus on equity is not just a desirable quality to possess, but a necessity.

Every society needs to incorporate gender equity into its core values.

It's crucial to distinguish between equity and equality, and the #EmbraceEquity campaign theme for IWD 2023 aims to initiate discussions about why equal opportunities are insufficient.

Since people come from diverse backgrounds, true inclusion and a sense of belonging necessitate equitable actions.

IWD suggests that the terms equity and equality are frequently used interchangeably.

These words share a common root in the Latin word "aequus," which means "equal," "fair," or "even."

This etymology gave rise to "aequitas" for equity and "aequalitas" for equality.

Despite their similarities, equity and equality are distinct concepts.

The #EmbraceEquity campaign theme for IWD 2023 aims to stimulate global discussions on this critical issue and its implications.

The distinction between equity and equality is crucial, and it is essential to comprehend, recognize, and appreciate it.

The #EmbraceEquity campaign theme for IWD 2023 intends to create conversations worldwide about why "equal opportunities are no longer enough" and can even be exclusive rather than inclusive.

In 2022, the #BreakTheBias campaign theme for International Women's Day gained immense support worldwide, with thousands of people sending in pictures to demonstrate their solidarity.

This campaign aimed to raise awareness about identifying and confronting both conscious and unconscious bias to promote positive change for women globally.

With this, IWD is now urging people to show significant global solidarity and support again in 2023.
