Free Housing for Young Adults

In an article from The Tablet, Sist. Marie Mackey was reportedly one of the Sisters that provided free housing to young adults who were still figuring out their lives.

Accordingly, alongside Sist. Nancy Gilchriest, SSND, of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, created the Christus Vivit Community House for those young adults in need.

The two nuns reportedly named the community house commemorating Pope Francis' apostolic exhortation in 2019, promoting the connection between Jesus Christ and young adults.

Sister Marie reportedly said it is a great opportunity for young adults to have fellowship, share prayers and meals, and connect with other young people in the community.

Moreover, as reported, the house meant for young adults is located at the Passionists Monastery campus in Jamaica Estates.

The Christus Vivit Community House is open for young men and women starting with their futures, as reported.

About Sist. Marie Mackey

On the same website, Sister Mickey, who will reportedly celebrate her 25th anniversary in serving the church and her vows in 2023, shared her religious life journey and beliefs.

Sister Marie is reportedly the current director of the campus ministry at St. Joseph's University in Brooklyn.

As reported, she committed her vows at age 36 and did not regret anything. She was a parishioner of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church.

Moreover, Sister Marie was reportedly pursuing her dreams then. She went to The Mary Louis Academy and received two master's degrees in English secondary education at Queens College and Theology at the seminary of the Immaculate Conception before going into religious life.

As reported, she served as a teacher in diocesan schools, including St. Francis Prep, The Mary Louis Academy, and the since-closed Bishop Kearney High School.

At first, she had reportedly no idea of entering the religious life until she visited St Joseph's College and met some nuns of St. Joseph of Brentwood.

Sister Marie was reportedly amazed by the independence and dedication to the education of the sisters she met and encouraged to enter life serving God and the community.

Moreover, nuns are known for wearing a cornette, and people think they are obedient women living a secluded life that only serves the church and Jesus Christ, as reported.

At that point, Sister Marie wanted to break the stereotypes created by the people in the community.

She does not reportedly wear Cornette and believes that over half of the religious community in the United States does not wear cornetts.

In hundreds of religious women communities in the U.S., each community has its own different beliefs, she said.
