The Supreme Court has recently released a decision on the Dobbs v. Jackson case, approving the removal of abortion rights in the country.
Although some churches approve of the decision, the Presiding Bishop, Most Rev. Michael Bruce Curry, has expressed his grief over the Supreme Court through a released statement.
Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization Details
According to an article from Clarion-Ledger, the Supreme Court released the decision for the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization and ruled in favor of the State on June 24. It was said in the ruling that the Constitution gives no right to abortion.
It was then when the House Bill 1510, also known as the Gestational Age Act, was signed by the Mississippi Gov. Phil Byrant into law on March 19, 2018.
The signed law was designed to "[e]xcept in a medical emergency or in the case of a severe fetal abnormality, a person shall not intentionally or knowingly perform . . . or induce an abortion of an unborn human being if the probable gestational age of the unborn human being has been determined to be greater than fifteen (15) weeks."
The next day, Sacheen Carr-Ellis, a doctor in the Jackson Women's Health Organization, sued the then-state health officer, Thomas E. Dobbs. The doctor said that the state law conflicts with the court's Roe v. Wade decision of 1973.
The Roe v. Wade case was the root cause of the constitutional right to abortion, as reported.
As per the article, the United States District Court Judge ruled in favor of the Women's Health Organization and blocked the 15-week ban, ruling that the law amounted to an unconstitutional ban on abortion prior to viability on Nov. 20, 2018.
The State appealed Reeves' decision and had an oral argument in December 2021, as reported.
