Church’s History

H.W. Church was formally inaugurated by Presiding Elder L.K. William on March 1, 1987, at 4801 E. Murph Community A.M.E. AZ's Glendale's Myrtle Street, according to the church's website.

The church said that it is named after "The Right Reverend" Henry Wendell Murph, one of the African Methodist Episcopal Church's longest-serving bishops.

According to the church, "He invested in people because he felt that God impacted the world through the power of the human spirit.”

Bishop William Burden was Murph's first pastor, the church said.

The church said that since Bishop Burden, Murph has been fortunate to have had a number of leaders who have brought growth and development through the acquisition of numerous buildings.

The church added the creation of a food bank to feed the less fortunate, and the addition of a weekly service segment that is specifically geared toward children.

Using the CERBY strategy, which promotes member teamwork, Pastor Dr. D. Charles Wharry reignited a revival at Murph Community AME Church in 2009, according to the church.

The church said that Community involvement, Education, Retain (recruit, retrain), Building (alternative financial initiatives), and Youth are the objectives of the CERBY plan (Scholarships & Programs).

Pastor Gerald Richard, the most recent former pastor, declared the church's new motto, "We are one family," continuing the emphasis on teamwork, it added.

Pastor William Cornick Jr. MDiv. is the church's current pastor and upholds the original vision by promoting strong stewardship, neighborhood, and religiously based involvement.

Murph currently resides at 6702 N. 27th Ave. in Phoenix after going through multiple moves. The Murph Community AME Church is open to everyone.
