Church Continues to Save Souls, Christian Living

According to the church's website, Tanner Chapel is still dedicated to the welfare of society and the salvation of souls, as well as to Christian living, healthy families, economic growth, civic engagement, and social welfare.

Tanner Chapel fosters an outreach ministry of Christian care outside of its doors under the pastoral direction of the Reverend Dr. Benjamin N. Thomas, Sr., and with the blessing of God, the church said.

The church said Tanner Community Development Corporation (TCDC), a faith-based 501(c)3 organization, carries out this work.

The TCDC's activities focus on assisting the physically challenged, the elderly and ill, needy children, families, and the homeless, it added.

The church said TCDC offers the local community a range of services for health and housing, literacy, education, financial prospects, and jobs.

Tanner Chapel A.M.E. Church is still working to close the gap between the church and the neighborhood, it added.

Growing Church

The oldest African American church in Arizona is Historic Tanner Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, according to the church

The church said courthouse records show that in 1886, the property was owned by an African Methodist Episcopal Mission.

It added that it was founded during the pioneer days when Charles Ward, N. D. Valentine, Laura Valentine, and Sister Bell met with the Reverend H. H. Hawkins proposing the establishment of a Christian mission to foster "family life."

At the intersection of Second Street and East Jefferson Street, another parcel of land was purchased in 1899 as the African Methodist Episcopal Mission expanded, the church said.

In recognition of Bishop Benjamin T. Tanner, the African Methodist Episcopal Mission was renamed Tanner Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church after this change, it added.
