Awaken Church plays a vital role in the new movement of conservative activists who creates noise in public and sometimes give general threatening statements since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Voice of San Diego reported on May 16 that some church leaders and supporters had been attending County Board of Supervisors meetings regularly. Also revealed was that the church has collaborated with political groups. They do this to encourage other people with the same perspectives to run for office.
Besides, the website noted that one individual compared the government to Nazi Germany. The man repeated, “Heil Fauci" before raising a copy of the Nuremberg code. Moreover, three of the church’s pastors attended the Jan. 6 events that paved the way for a riot.
One former pastor, David Chiddick, manages his coffee shop in Escondido, as stated on the website. Now he is running against Rep. Scott Peters for the 50th Congressional District. Some of the church’s pastors have been dedicated to disseminating medical misinformation. These are about events and rallies for the past two years.
Attracted Big Names in Conservative Circles
During the pandemic, the said news stated that Awaken Church first followed the country's regulations and shut its doors. They started conducting their services online. But by June 2020, the church reopened its doors to the congregation. In the next six months, the church was involved in conflicts with the government.
The county gave the church a cease and desist order after receiving a video showing indoor services at the church in July, the website added. Although the lead pastor, Jurgen Matthesius, complied, it did not last long, and they began holding indoor meetings a month later.
Since then, the church has received more attention than ever before, the news revealed. Awaken’s pastors became regulars on KUSI. It began to get the attention of some big names in the said circle- like Candace Owens, Dennis Prager, and Tucker Carlson. Also, Charlie Kirk and Simone Gold became interested in the church’s movement. The website added that Gold is a doctor and recently pleaded guilty to participating in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
Church Allied with Political Groups
The news report also stated that the church works with political organizations. They are inviting like-minded conservatives to run for office. One of the said groups is the RMNNT which effectively raises an army to impact local politics, as mentioned on their website.
The group highlighted that they rallied over a hundred individuals to protest the San Diego Unified School Board sex program. They also held their very first protest. They had hundreds of residents write their opinion to the county board to stop the COVID lockdown of businesses.
Moreover, the group collected more than 1100 signatures for the recall movement for Newsom. They also conducted sex education. They want to teach parents the truth about what their children are learning in the new sex-ed program in public schools.
The group was able to register hundreds of individuals to vote and passed out conservative voter guides to thousands of citizens.
