Birthday of Jesus Christ

According to the History website, the main reason why Christmas is celebrated on Dec. 25 remains to be determined. But, most studies believe that Christmas is rooted as an alternative to pagan winter solstice celebrations.

As further explained, the oldest existing fact of the celebration is noted in a Roman almanac. The website said it tells of Christ’s birth festival wherein Rome in 336 A.D. led that celebration, as revealed on the website.

Roman Pagan Holiday

The same website revealed that early and modern Christians value Easter as the most important holiday on the Christian calendar. It is the season wherein they remember the death and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, as explained on the website.

They stated that as Christians began to adopt the Roman world in the early fourth century, the church leaders had to adopt the famous Roman page holiday. They noted that they celebrate the “birthday of the unconquered sun,” the Roman name for the winter solstice.

Festival of Christ

The history website revealed that the term “Christmas” was introduced in English. They explained that initially, it was regarded as “Chrites Maesse,” which means festival of Christ in Old English.

Moreover, they said Christ’s birth celebration was scattered to other Christian churches in the west and east. They explained that most believers soon celebrated Jesus’ birth on Dec. 25.

In addition, the Roman festival later added other rituals from the winter solstice so various pagan groups could practice their customs. The website said that these traditions include the lighting of the Yule log and decorating with evergreens by tribes in German.

More importantly, they revealed that church leaders made initiatives to make the winter-solstice holidays appropriate to their beliefs.

The efforts happened after the Roman Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity in 321 and sanctioned Christianity, as explained on the website. They added that church leaders made it more seamless conversion to Christianity for the emperor’s views.
