College Avenue Baptist Church will decorate the church’s facilities to welcome the Christmas season on Sunday, Nov. 20.

The church’s website announced that they will welcome everyone to join the program. They added that there would be a lot of tasks to do in the sanctuary, courtyard, and the areas around the College Avenue campus.

Story of Christmas Decoration

According to the Quality Logo Products website, they could base the decorations for Christmas more than 2,500 years ago in ancient Rome. As further mentioned, people decorate their houses in wreaths and evergreen boughs during the Saturnalia, a pagan festival.

In addition, during this festival, they have a vast feast wherein people offer gifts to their gods, as the website noted.

Moreover, the website said that people nowadays do not give dolls, candles, or caged birds to gods so they can survive winter. They revealed that many practices from Saturnalia are still found in today’s Christmas celebrations.

The website mentioned that lighting up trees, putting wreaths on doors, and drinking too much eggnog is part of the pagan festival.

Inventions of Christmas Tree

The same website explained that historians still determine the origin of the Christmas trees. But, they revealed that most of the traditions came from Germany, as stated on the website.

Besides, they said a missionary sacrificed a substantial sacred tree to the god Thor. To give respect to the minister, the Germans would prepare trees in their houses and decorate them with candles.

The website noted that Germans changed the trees to “paradise trees” when Christianity was introduced to them in the 16th century. They added that they started putting apples for decorations.

Stockings, Wreaths

The website also mentioned those hanging stockings on the fireplace every Christmas based on Clement Clarke Moore's poem. They said that the poem was published in 1823.

St. Nick was inspired by the famous piece and started filling all the stockings and raising them on the chimney, as further explained on the website.

It stressed that the Ancient Romans hung wreaths to commemorate Saturnalia in winter. They emphasized that some people believe they used wreaths to count the four weeks before Christmas in medieval Germany.

Kids, Families at College Avenue Baptist Church

The church’s Homepage announced that they offer services for children, young people, and families. They explained that they have Sunday School for teenagers and children at 9 a.m.

The children at College Avenue Baptist Church can connect with others and their leaders through free play and guided programs. They added that kids could also drop by their Children’s library and prepare for their next lesson.

More importantly, the children would have the opportunity to be part of meaningful worship and listen to Bible stories, as highlighted on the website. Besides, they could join small groups with their leader to have a deeper understanding of their topic.

The church noted that they welcome kids of all ages in their indoor and outdoor services.
