First Presbyterian Church San Diego (FPCSD) will hold the 11th Annual Hymn Sing with the theme, “Our Song Shall Rise Thee,” on Friday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. in the church’s sanctuary.
The church’s announcement mentioned that the Westminster Orchestra would join the event.
FPCSD emphasized that they were hoping everyone could join them.
Besides, they announced that they will have an “ice cream social.”
Church Hymns
According to the Church of Jesus Christ the Latter-days Saints website, church hymns are a kind of worship. They could be a way of prayer of thanksgiving and commitment, as further discussed on the website.
They noted that various hymns could create unity among the Saints and establish a community of believers. As the website emphasized, people could invite the Spirito into their gatherings and lives by singing hymnal songs.
Moreover, the website added that people could learn the doctrine through hymns. They explained that believers often use hymns to testify to God’s goodness. They said God could comfort and heal His people by listening to and singing hymnal songs.
Building Unity, Community of Saints
The same website emphasized that while believers sing hymnal songs together, they form the spirit of unity within the Saints. They explained that believers who are gathered experience the spirit of unity and feel all over the world.
They highlighted Elder Dallin Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, who shared his first trip to Brazil. He attended a regional conference and said that the Portuguese language meant nothing to him until he heard their beautiful choir, which crossed all the language barriers.
The hymnal song spoke to his soul, as he stressed on the website.
Hymns were said to connect both Saints and Missionaries.
In addition, the website mentioned that hymns could connect the gap between Saints and missionaries. They both realized that God called all of them to serve, as further explained on the website.
They noted Elder Packer from the Missionary Department that he felt the missionary anthem was necessary for them. The website said that his sister reminded him of the song “Called to Serve,” and he knew at that moment that it was the right song.
The song was claimed to unite all the missionaries from the Missionary Training Center as they marched into the stadium carrying their flags from various countries, as further explained on the website.
According to the website, 60,000 individuals stood and started cheering the missionaries. The audience also joined the hymn singing, as revealed on the website.
Learning Doctrine through Hymns
The website also explained that church music, such as hymnal songs, could be a way of teaching the Doctrine to the congregation. They stressed that it not only creates unity but also helps in the community of Saints.
They quoted God’s word explaining how the Lord expects His people to become a “peculiar treasure” and a “holy nation.” They added that individuals are connected with unique characteristics, behavior, and consciousness to the Holy Spirit.
