First United Methodist Church to support 'Meals on Wheels' for San Diego elders

First United Methodist Church (FUMC) announced that 25% of their Thanksgiving offering would go to Meals on Wheels (MOW) to help seniors and veterans in the county.

The church said its news website offering is an excellent opportunity to give back a part of all of God’s blessings this year. They added that their monetary gifts could support active programs at FUMC. 

In addition, they explained that giving a Thanksgiving offering has been a shared practice in the community and the congregation. 

Honoring John Hermann

The same website posted that FUMC supports MOW to give respect to their dear friend John Hermann. According to them, Hermann has been passionate about serving seniors since they established the organization in 1960. 

As further explained, MOW offers elderly and veterans more than 650,000 meals in San Diego. They also visit them every year, as added on the website. 

Moreover, FUMC thanked all the saints guiding their families, jobs, and church. 

Meals on Wheels

The Meals on Wheels website emphasized that they seek to strengthen seniors and veterans to continue to be self-reliant. They foster their physical, mental, and spiritual needs at Meals on Wheels, as noted on the website. 

As further explained, MOW San Diego distributes more than 650,000 healthy meals with friendly visitation to older residents. They noted that they assist them in their houses where they stay.

In addition, the organization is also a part of Meals on Wheels America (MOWA) and Meals on Wheels California (MOWCA). They said they want to promote problem awareness that affects the health, well-being, and freedom of people ages 60 and above. 

Moreover, the organization also cares about its clients’ pets, sicknesses, and caregivers, as stated on the website. 

Impacts of MOW

On the same website, MOW San Diego revealed that they have 3 402 volunteers who have been helping them in fulfilling their mission. They mentioned that they had distributed 20,767,638 meals since they started in 1960.

In addition, the volunteers at MOW San Diego had traveled 642 781 miles to serve and fulfill their mission. Also, they noted that 4,306 seniors had received help from the organization. 

Besides, they assisted 552 animals, according to the website. 

More than Meals

Bren Wakefield, the president and CEO of MOW stated on the website that the San Diego community is resilient by its cultural differences and solid American military history.

He explained that individuals choose to stay in San Diego for retirement and spend the best years of their lives. The country has the top universities and research facilities in the world. Besides, it has a developing and vibrant senior population. 

Wakefield emphasized that he also wants to grow old and live with grace and dignity. He desires to give senior community members the to enjoy the beautiful place of San Diego. 

In addition, the organization stated that respect for diversity is one of their motivations to make their community a better place to live. 

Another value that drives them is having integrity in their words and deed, as noted on the website. They added that the organization values commitment to its mission.
