Greater Life Church encouraged members to attend the "Self Defense Class: Stand Firm" on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 10 a.m.
The church’s Facebook page noted that the course is intended to prepare its congregation as God will do great things in their lives. They added that they are offering the class for free, so members ages 18 and above are welcome to join.
In the post, the church reminded those interested to wear their gym attire and bring bottled water. They also have to prepare their positive mindset before joining the class, as posted on the website.
Teaching Self Defense
The Crossway website explained that there are questions about teaching self-defense in the church. The website said students should know how to protect themselves if they are being bullied at school. Even though it was written in the Bible that they should promote peace.
It emphasized that individuals should have the courage to fight back with courage, especially when no one is there to defend them. Besides, they should know how to pray and forgive those who hurt them, as added on the website.
On the other hand, if no one taught them how to defend themselves, they would continue to suffer from physical danger. It could also be harmful to their mental health, as noted on the website.
Self-Defense in Scriptures
The same website revealed that Jesus’ disciples carried swords, even after three years of their journey with Jesus. They explained that when Jesus and his disciples are in the garden of Gethsemane, they are carrying swords.
Besides, they explained that people in the first century used swords to defend themselves. The website emphasized that sometimes self-defense is important to avoid suffering and being harmed.
They added that there are numerous passages in God’s word that motivate people to escape from danger. Some passages talk about using self-defense if needed, as mentioned on the website.
However, the same website stressed that Christians should not fight back when they are persecuted. They should not respond when people are questioning their faith, as further explained on the website.
They noted that believers should accept persecution as part of God’s calling. The website stated that it would be for the sake of the gospel.
Jesus said in Matthew 5 that people should not resist evil, but He is also telling his people not to fight back when someone insults them because of their faith.
