In response to food scarcity and healthy option challenges for at-risk teenagers, Harbor City Church works with David’s Harp Foundation (DHF) to give groceries to these young people throughout the summer.
The church announcement mentioned that they would also educate these young people on how to shop at the grocery store on a budget.
Where it All Started
According to the DHF website, Brandon Steppe founded that organization and opened his private, transformed garage studio to community youth. These young people lack support and inspiration both personally and academically.
Steppe developed an informal program. His approach made the students improve their grades for studio time. He then formed the foundation for David’s Harp.
In 2002, they posted that DHF was formerly built as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. In the following year, because of the generous financial support of the community, the webpage stated that
DHF’s Student Production Lab expanded, and it doubled its capacity. The following year, they reached out to more urban communities. The foundation worked with three local high schools.
Their initiatives grew to help 207 youth involved in after-school and house night programs. The website mentioned that DHF learners increased their grade averages by 16.9 %. This result is because they participate in the foundation’s programs and continuous mentorship.
Today, the website revealed that the foundation continues to nourish academic and creative excellence. They do these initiatives for the young people they serve. They said they had developed their programs to benefit and foster the youth in the Juveniles Probation System.
Why Teens Need to Know Budgeting
The Balance website stated that a 2021 Citizens Bank Junior Achievement Survey says about 56% of teens have talked about finances with their parents. But, only a third of the class of 2020 high school graduates said they are financially independent of their parents. This goal is within ten years of graduation.
Besides, they added that educating children on how to budget is one of the most essential money lessons parents could give. The website noted that budgeting could help young people easily achieve financial freedom.
They emphasized that teaching kids the basics of budgeting could start as early as age 13 or when teenagers start earning money.
They could achieve this by having a part-time job or an allowance. Discussing the differences between needs and wants could also be an essential part of how to teach young people budgeting.
The Balance website also noted that free financial resources for young people could make it easier to educate them on how to budget. These tools include budgeting apps or prepaid credit cards. Additionally, teens should learn that a budget is a plan for spending money every month.
When they know how to budget their finances, the website says they could avoid debt or spending more money than they have. Teenagers could make a plan for where their money goes and their resources.
The website said it is easier for teens to understand that income and expenses are the two most essential elements required to make budgets.
