Mission Hills United Church of Christ (UCC) conducts their monthly “Feeding Mission Hills” Free Food Distribution on May 17 at the Mission Hills UCC parking lot.
The church’s Facebook post noted that they started giving out food at 11 a.m. until the last bags of groceries were distributed by 1:15 p.m. The church also asked members to tell their neighbors about it.
Church’s Mission & Outreach Ministry
Since its founding, Mission Hills UCC has been dedicated to assisting individuals in their community, whether near or far. According to the church’s website, they plan and organize volunteers for various outreach events. These programs include Rolling Readers and Special Delivery: Feeding San Diego food distribution. They also help with SNAP registration.
Besides, the church partners with Uptown Faith Community Service Center so they can give their homeless neighbors food, counseling, and other services every month. They also highlighted a “5 for 5 Congregation," which assists with all UCC Special Offerings. They collected funds to support their global missions and educational programs.
The church could help in their justice and witness ministries through the aforementioned project. They could also give financial aid to retired clergy and church workers.
Moreover, Mission and Outreach host Alternative Christmas. The website revealed that members could give their donations in honor of their loved ones to some chosen local charities. Finally, the church has brought Fairly Traded coffee and products to members and friends.
Mission-Oriented Church
The Mission Hills UCCC is a mission-oriented congregation, as their website noted. They hope to leave the world a better place than when it existed. They have several ongoing mission outreach programs to make their goal happen. These projects include Feeding America and the El Nido shelter for abused women and children. Also, the church has ongoing building programs in Tijuana. They have special delivery food events for those with AIDS/HIV and cancer.
The church believes that they must say their principles and do it through their actions through the said mission efforts.
More importantly, the church said they are an “Open and Affirming” congregation. Everyone looking for a home is welcome. They mentioned that they have an exclusive outreach to LGBT individuals. They emphasized that a person would find their church a safe place to learn, ask questions, and grow. As an ONA congregation, the church believes that LGBT individuals have equal rights as everyone else. They are free to work and worship in the church.
The church’s website also mentioned that their seats are filled with a diverse group. The church added that they are a multi-generational, multi-racial, and multi-cultural congregation. Besides, the church is child-friendly, wherein kids are welcome and encouraged to be a part of their worship and learning for their community life.
They revealed that it is not unusual for at least 25 kids to come running in front for “their time of the worship service” when the pastor gives a specially designed message for them.
