Saddleback Church is hosting a month-long Hispanic Heritage celebration from Thursday, Sept. 15, to Saturday, Oct. 15.

The church’s Facebook page announced that the program is their way to give back to the impact of Hispanic Americans in their culture and community.

Saddleback Church encouraged members to stay updated and join the said celebration.

Knowing Latinos

According to the Britannica website, Hispanic Americans are also known as Latinos and Latinas. These people came from Latin America, as added on the website.

As further explained, Hispanics are the biggest ethnic minority living in America. They make up more than one-sixth of the nation’s population. The website emphasized that there are over 50 million Hispanic Americans residing in 50 states.

In addition, they noted that Latinos do regard themselves as a single group but usually identify themselves with their family’s area of origin. This diverse culture includes individuals in Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Cuba.

Besides, people living in El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, and Guatemala also belong to this group. The website mentioned that residents of Colombia, Honduras, and other parts of Central and South America are part of Hispanic groups. They noted that Spain is also included.

Fastest-growing Ethnic Minority

The same website revealed that more than half of the rise in the nation’s total population from 2000 to 2010 was because of the increase in the Hispanic population alone. They emphasized that it is one of the “fastest-growing ethnic minorities” in the country.

Moreover, they became the biggest minority group in America in 2002, the website stated. But, they said that during the Great Recession in 2007, their numbers slowly decreased. They said that it was also due to the economic crisis in the country.

Mexican Americans

The Britannica website explained that Mexican Americans are one of the biggest groups of Hispanics. They added that over half of all Hispanic Americans are of Mexican ancestry. These settlers include Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California, as noted on the website.

In addition, the website stated that great chances and higher living standards in America are the reasons why many people from Mexico and Central America migrated to the country.

The website explained that Mexicans and other Latin Americans relocating to the U.S. must apply for citizenship. They said that they are considered immigrants or aliens.

Puerto Ricans

Meanwhile, the second largest Hispanic group mentioned was the Puerto Ricans. As further explained, they make up about one-tenth of the Hispanic American population. The website revealed that Puerto Ricans were given citizenship in 1917.

The website said that the island became a part of the United States territory because of the Spanish-American War in 1898. Because of this, they noted that Puerto Ricans do not need a visa or passport to go back and forth between their island and the country.

Moreover, they said that Puerto Ricans are part of the commonwealth in association with America. They explained that relocation between Puerto Rico and America has been balanced. The website emphasized that it reflects more opportunities when moving to America.
