Church’s History

The website of Allen Temple AME Church stated that many freed slaves and their families moved to Summerhill in Southeast Atlanta after Emancipation in 1866.

Many of the locals wanted to establish a branch of the African Methodist Church because they respected its principles, the church said.

The church said that at the time, a committee from Summerhill visited an AME Church on Jenkins Street and asked for someone to be sent to help them start a church.

According to the church, Elder J. A. Wood was chosen to spearhead the effort to found this church in Summerhill.

Elder Wood oversaw the construction of a Brush Arbor near the intersection of Crumbley and Martin Streets, where the inaugural service was held, in the spring of 1866, it added.

According to the church's website, the land was bought near the intersection of Hammock Place and Martin Street on which the first church was constructed after a number of services in the Brush Arbor and prayer groups at various residences throughout the town.

It was stated that Reverend Wood, a pastor from 1839 to 1869, was the inspiration for the name of the chapel.

The church claimed that in June 2009, Rev. Scottie Swinney was appointed as the church's new pastor.

The parsonage was renovated and a new roof was put on. On Easter Sunday 2010, he oversaw the Cornerstone's opening, which had been promised.

The church said that installing security cameras helped in loss prevention because of his initiative, pledges were obtained, and a specially made bus for people with disabilities was ordered.

Church Transformation

The church's website states that after Reverend Dr. John A. Foster was named pastor in 2012, the Allen Temple underwent yet another change. When he arrived, the church underwent a change as technology gained popularity. The installation of Comcast Wi-Fi covered the entire building.

The Sunday worship services were aired live by the church starting in October 2012, the church said.

According to the church, Bishop Preston Warren Williams, II chose Reverend Dr. Thomas L. Bess as its current leader in May 2013. Under his stern instructions, a new PA system was installed.

Allen Temple was outfitted with strategically positioned hotspots for its own Wi-Fi in 2015. There is now a computer lab for both kids and adults. The pastor's office now has new flooring, giving it a fresh appearance.
