Atlanta First United Methodist Church’s History

Atlanta First United Methodist Church, according to its website, often chooses to remain in the city's center because it can meet the spiritual needs of both wealthy and less privileged people there.

It was claimed that in 1845, a nice man by the name of Samuel Mitchell allegedly made a generous property offer to the Methodists.

Near the Georgia Pacific building, the church asserted that the triangle's three sides are formed by Peachtree, Pryor, and Houston Streets.

Additionally, it mentioned that the location had a little wood cottage with chimneys on both ends. It further stated that it operated as a school during the week and as a church on Sundays.

The Union Sabbath School, a multireligious Sunday school, was launched, according to an announcement made by Atlanta First United Methodist Church.

According to the church, preaching services were held for the three denominations of Presbyterians, Baptists, and Methodists.

Even though the history of the church predominantly involves individuals, places and structures are given more significance than specific individuals, according to Atlanta First United Methodist Church.

The congregation, according to the church, cherished the years of sacrifice, compassion, and faith that had been made during the period of the church's first 170 years in order for it to advance and expand.

According to Atlanta First United Methodist Church, notable people have made a significant contribution to Atlanta's growth both historically and today.

Church’s Worship

Pastors in the area informed Atlanta First United Methodist Church that worshippers had congregated there, the church’s website stated.

According to the church, small groups conducted services and made future plans in residences, warehouses on Peachtree Street and Auburn Avenue, and even the offices of the Georgia Railroad.

According to the church's website, the 175th anniversary of the founding of Atlanta First United Methodist Church will be commemorated in 2022.

Given how long the church has been a part of the community and serving God, it places a high priority on how its past is presented.

On Laity Sunday, the church also welcomed Dr. Helen Jin Kim.

The church shared on Facebook that Dr. Kim, the Grow Team Leader, had given the sermon.

According to the church's post, Sunday, Oct. 23, was observed as Laity Sunday.

The church asserted that Dr. Kim teaches American religious history at Emory University's Candler School of Theology as an adjunct professor.
