Church's History

According to Atlanta First United Methodist Church, places and buildings are given more significance than particular persons.

The congregation, according to the church, valued the years of commitment, love, and faith that had been made in order for the church to develop and thrive during the period of the first 170 years.

According to the Atlanta First United Methodist Church, a multireligious Sunday school called the Union Sabbath School was opened.

The church claimed that preaching sessions for the three denominations of Presbyterians, Baptists, and Methodists were held.

According to its website, Atlanta First United Methodist Church frequently chooses to remain in the city's central business district because it can attend to the spiritual needs of both wealthy and less fortunate residents there.

It was said that the Methodists had received a generous land offer in 1845 from a charitable man by the name of Samuel Mitchell.

The triangle beside the Georgia Pacific building, according to the church, has three sides made up of Peachtree, Pryor, and Houston Streets.

It added that the place had a tiny wood cabin with chimneys on both ends. It further stated that it operated as a school during the week and as a church on Sundays.

Church Celebrations

According to the church's website, the 175th founding anniversary of Atlanta First United Methodist Church will be commemorated in 2022.

Given how long it has been a member of the community and serving God, Atlanta First United Methodist Church said it places a great priority on how its past is communicated.

On Laity Sunday, the church also welcomed Dr. Helen Jin Kim.

According to a Facebook post from the church, Dr. Kim, the Grow Team Leader, preached during the event. They observed Laity Sunday on Oct. 23.

The church reported that Dr. Kim teaches American religious history courses as an adjunct professor at Emory University's Candler School of Theology.

The Atlanta First United Methodist Church website stated that neighborhood pastors informed them that worshippers had congregated there.

The church asserted that small groups convened in residences, Peachtree Street and Auburn Avenue warehouses, and even at the Georgia Railroad's offices to carry out services and plot future plans.
