Ben Hills United Methodist Church's History

The Methodism developed a new field of activity known as Wesley Chapel, located in the Niskey Lake section of Fulton County, Georgia, around the year 1853, according to the Ben Hills United Methodist Church's website.

The church said David Waits, John Waits, and Sidney Robins were among the founding members.

David Waits was a well-known singer-songwriter. He was both the camp meetings' and the church's Chorister, according to the website.

The website stated that the congregation was composed of a small group of devoted and consecrated men and women dedicated to God's service.

It added that a post office was established near Campbellton Road and Fairburn Road after the Civil War.

According to the website, Ben Hill was named after Benjamin Harvey Hill, the new United States senator from Georgia's Troup County. Senator Hill was a well-known orator in his day, and it was stated that his name brought prominence to the community.

Church's Pastor

Reverend Byron E. Thomas was named senior pastor of Ben Hill United Methodist Church on June 16, 2013, according to the church's website.

It added that from 2006 to 2013, he was the senior pastor of Central United Methodist Church in Atlanta. From 1999 to 2005, he was the senior pastor of Fort Street United Methodist Church in Atlanta.

Pastor Thomas has always stressed the need for spiritual formation as a basic requirement for faithfully carrying out the ministry God has assigned to the Church, according to the website.

Thomas underscored that the United Methodist congregations perform best when laity who are Christ-centered and display a love for God, for themselves, and God's people carry out the church's mission.

The church said the Ben Hill's people continue to be blessed from anointed and dynamic pastoral and lay leadership.

Through its Commission on Missions, Health and Wellness Ministry, Urban Responsibility Ministry (financial aid to those in need), Food Bank, and Trinity Table feeding program, the congregation meets the needs of the less fortunate in the metro Atlanta area and beyond, according to the website.

The Black Methodist Church Renewal and World Hunger programs are also supported, it added.

The church's website stated that the Ben Hill church purchased two oxen in September 2010 to help fight hunger in Mpoyi, Congo.

Ben Hill donates to the United Methodist Church Advance Program, the United Negro College Fund, Gammon Theological Seminary, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Clark-Atlanta University, Paine College, the NAACP, and other charitable organizations on an annual basis, according to the website.
