The North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church in Atlanta has appealed for help for the food pantry.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, Feb. 24, the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church said for many years, Acworth United Methodist Church has held a food pantry every Tuesday.
According to the church’s post, prior to COVID, the food pantry was served by a small group of largely senior volunteers who supplied roughly 30 households per week.
The church, however, noted that starting March of 2020, there has been a significant growth in the community's need.
It stated that the ministry increased from visiting 30 families per week to more than 300 families per week in just a few weeks. The church served 400 families every week at its peak.
The operation had to be modified on the fly to satisfy those requirements. In a hurry, the pantry needed more food, more room, and a lot more volunteers, according to the church.
The organization had enough food to offer because of their cooperation with the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
They transformed the enterprise into a drive-through pantry, relocated to a larger church building, purchased freezers, refrigerators, carts, and a pallet jack, and enlisted the help of a large number of volunteers. The ministry was able to meet the need thanks to a lot of hard effort.
Pantry Served Communities
The pantry served 654,836 pounds of food, 34,990 persons, and 8,739 households in 2020. The church donated 7,613 pounds of food in January 2020 and 94,978 pounds in December 2020.
In 2021, the pantry distributed 618,289 pounds of food to 37,046 people in 9,981 houses. Many of these are senior citizens or families with children.
The church was proud to announce in mid-2021 that it had distributed over one million pounds of food since March of 2020.
Fortunately, over the last year, the demand has decreased. The church currently serves 180 families per week. It is open every Tuesday until 4 p.m. or until the food runs out.
