North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church says scholarship opportunities available for students every year

The North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Georgia said the Georgia UMCommission on Higher Education + Collegiate Ministry offered scholarship opportunities for students every year.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Jan. 20, the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church said scholarships are open to current undergraduate and seminary students for United Methodists in the North and South Georgia Conferences.

According to the post, the 2022 application season will be open from Jan. 3 to May 1.

Scholarships

The North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church said the John T Hood and Martha Emma Yancey Hood Scholarship grants $1,000 to a North Georgia Annual Conference member who is enrolled in a UM University Senate accredited seminary.

The church said the Ida Baugh Smith Scholarship is a need-based award given to North Georgia Conference students at the University of Mississippi.

It added that the James Leon and Myrtice Marie K Peed Scholarships are given to South Georgia Conference qualified candidates.

The General Board of Higher Education & Ministry, the United Methodist Higher Education Foundation, the Georgia United Methodist Foundation, and the United Methodist Connectional Federal Credit Union are all other United Methodist scholarship resources.

Church’s History

The North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church comprises over 800 congregations, over 1,300 clergy members, and about 340,000 lay members, according to its website.

Developing moral Christian leaders, engaging in poor-relations ministry, improving global health, advocating for justice, responding to calamities, and completing the denomination's purpose of "making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world" are among its objectives.

Phishing Messages

The North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church has issued a public warning concerning phishing communications claiming to be from Bishop Sue.

In a Facebook post on Friday, Jan. 7, the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church stated that they had received a number of reports from pastors whose congregations had been the target of an e-mail scam.

According to the post, several members of the church got fraudulent emails claiming to be from the pastor and demanding financial aid.

The North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church said the fake emails contain requests for a gift card and urgent help for a loved one.

If they get a phishing email, they should report it to their email provider and delete it, according to the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church.

According to the church, individuals should be vigilant, cautious, and confirm the message's veracity before reacting.

In a separate Facebook post, the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church said the free pantry has been in place on the church's campus since October 2021.

The Little Free Pantry, according to the church, is modeled on the "Little Free Library" model, with the exception that the box is packed with food and sanitary goods rather than books.
