Silke Mathias, a parishioner at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, decided to help less fortunate mothers with their needs. She felt compelled to reach out when she saw one of her friends helping pregnant women in need.
Baby Drive
In a report with Denver Catholic, Mathias decided to make that part of her ministry. She partnered with Marisol Health Clinic in Denver to launch a "baby drive" held every month.
The initiative will benefit mothers-to-be who are struggling with their finances. These women chose not to pursue abortion.
Hearing God's Call
Mathias explained that God spoke to her when she saw her friend on social media. According to her, God encouraged her to do the same thing.
She said that God told her heart that she needed to convince women to plan a baby registry instead of abortion.
Mathias admitted that she did not know where to start. She decided to look for options.
She later found herself drawn to Marisol Health Clinic. The faith-based health center was a ministry of Catholic Charities.
Mathias said that she and the health clinic found a way to sponsor these struggling mothers.
According to the report, Mathias receives a list of a mother in need. She creates an Amazon wish list for the woman and shares it with her parish community.
She told the news outlet that the concept of a charity held every month was daunting. Mathias explained that she thought it would lose its appeal.
According to Mathias, it was by God's grace that they were able to continue supporting the mothers and babies for over a year now.
Baby Shower
Marisol Health holds a baby shower at the end of the month.
Sara Lugo explained that the baby shower was the ministry's way of welcoming the mother, the baby, and the entire family.
According to Lugo, the gathering was a celebration of life. Lugo is the Program Director at Catholic Charities and Marisol Health.
The Amazon wish list includes baby items such as car seats, strollers, bottles, and more.
Making your Ministry
Mathias encouraged the faithful to listen to God. She said that God often pulled at people's heartstrings.
She said that God would compel someone to help a struggling family or begin a ministry to help the poor. Mathias used her story on how God called people to be His missionaries.
She added that the need was always there, and it was their duty as believers to help fill it.
Mathias said that she loved to hold a little piece of heaven and hoped that struggling mothers would do the same.
Lugo thanked Mathias for her generosity and support. She also thanked Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Littleton and their other parish partners.
She added that they would not accomplish their goals without their help.
Sanctity of Human Life
