Job Responsibilities:
1. Provide for the care, safety and nurturing of the children attending the after-school and summer programs by adhering to the minimum standards for childcare as required by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services Childcare Licensing Division.
2. Effectively teach the biblical curriculum daily to the children attending the after-school program, supporting each child’s learning with hands on activities and application of the curriculum to meet the different learning styles and developmental needs of individual children.
3. Coordinate and implement the educational and recreational program components for the afterschool and summer programs, customizing the components to be age and developmentally appropriate for the children.
4. Provide tutoring support to assist children with homework during the school year.
5. Provide support and encouragement both in the classroom and outside of the classroom for all children and their families at WFDC
6. Plan, schedule and supervise all children’s special events, including field trips, and outings.
7. Be able to respond calmly to a child’s emotional needs and/or redirect challenging behavior from a biblical perspective.
8. Complete all required paperwork, including weekly calendar of activities, children’s roster, meal counts, monthly reports, and other information as requested by the Manager of Children’s Ministry.
9. Conduct parent conferences to discuss the children’s progress.
10. Provide updates on children’s progress interdepartmentally and with management, including interdepartmental staffing, reports and appropriate follow-up information as directed by supervisor.
11. Participate, as needed, in interdepartmental staffing and communication to help ensure that there are mutually agreed upon goals, requirements, outcomes, regarding the family.
12. Maintain a clean, sanitized and organized learning environment for the children in the classroom.

Other Job Responsibilities:
1. Participate in Ministry and prayer activities, as appropriate.
2. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education: BA/BS in Education or a Social Services-related field (Psychology, Sociology, Theology, Education, Religion, Ministry, etc.) required.

Skills & Experience: One (1) plus year(s) experience working with, ministering to, and teaching at- risk or homeless adolescents in a school, church, or youth program setting. Strong ability to minister & biblically counsel with those experiencing crisis situations. General knowledge and understanding of Biblical truths, substance abuse issues, mental health conditions, and homelessness. Strong knowledge in all Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Power Point, and Excel) and basic administrative and organizational skills. Must be able to pass a criminal background check.

Be able to work respectfully, professionally, and in a Christ-like manner with everyone, able to maintain required client/staff boundaries, and possess a willingness to serve the Lord in a ministry that deals with homeless men, women, and children.

Equipment Used: Phone, copy machine, multi-line computerized PBS system, computer, fax machine, Microsoft Office, email, social media, projector. Must be able to operate a 12 passenger van. Valid Texas Driver’s License with acceptable driving record and current liability insurance required.

Work Environment: Office, classrooms, outdoor areas and other common areas of the shelter as well as schools, churches, and off property at events and activities. Schedule is subject to change to meet the needs of the mission—i.e. may be required to work weekends, holidays and during emergency situations. Exposure to infectious diseases, poor hygiene, drug usage, verbal and physical abuse and other emergency situations relative to the homeless population is normal. Professional dress and comfortable shoes are recommended. Star of Hope t-shirt, black, blue, or khaki full length pants and comfortable shoes are required, when working in the classroom. Jeans with no holes/fraying may only be worn on Fridays and only as long as a Star of Hope shirt (T-shirt, polo-style or sweat shirt) is worn.

Relations with Others: Frequent contact with homeless individuals and families. Ability to communicate effectively with persons from a variety of ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. May also interact with donors, volunteers, social workers and staff from other agencies.

Physical Requirements: Ability to sit, stand, walk around for long periods of time. Must be able to sit on the floor and interact with youth for long periods and stand, bend, stoop, and climb stairs. Ability to move freely up and down stairs and around a large building inside and outside. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Clear speech, hearing and vision are required

Mental Requirements: Ability to organize, coordinate, and perform multiple daily tasks, goals, and projects in the performance of job duties. Ability to read, develop, and teach lesson plans from basic curriculum guidelines and outline. Strong oral and written communication skills required. Ability to identify and handle stressful and potentially explosive behavior among the guests and potential guests of the shelter by effectively de-escalating angry and combative individuals. Strong conflict resolution skills necessary. Desire and strong ability to evangelize and share the Gospel with hurting people is required.
