St. Mark’s Episcopal School in Houston, Texas is seeking a creative, organized, team player to serve as the Primary and Lower School Religion Teacher for the 2020-2021 school year. This is a position with the combined focus of classroom learning and spiritual support for students, families, and faculty. The primary duties include plan, organize, and implement the Godly Play religious education program for students in Preschool 2s through 4th grade, help develop and support the spiritual needs of our students, and plan, organize, and lead the Primary and Lower School chapel services in partnership with the School Chaplain.

St. Mark’s Lower School Religion Teacher will: (Demeanor)
• Receive students, parents, faculty, staff, and administration in a friendly, courteous manner, and be sensitive to how her/his demeanor is reflective of the School
• Adapt appropriately to circumstances that arise
• Communicate issues, questions, and circumstances to the Heads of Primary or Lower School in a timely and professional manner
• Work collegially with other members of the religion department to meet the spiritual needs of the St. Mark’s community.

Essential Duties:
• Acquire and maintain the skills to implement and teach the Godly Play religious education curriculum with students in Preschool 2s through 4th grade
• Supplement the curriculum with other materials and learning experiences that enrich the religion program and meet students' varying learning styles
• Create and maintain an active and engaging classroom environment with attractive displays, bulletin boards, and learning centers
• Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment
• Observe and evaluate students’ participation and performance
• Plan, prepare and implement activities to meet the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social needs of children
• Review classroom materials annually and order new materials as needed
• Update all necessary records accurately and completely
• Plan, organize, and lead Primary and Lower School chapel services in conjunction with the School Chaplain
• Develop and maintain acolyte and reader schedules for Primary and Lower School chapel services
• Maintain the portal group page for each class providing parents with an overview of activities, curriculum topics, and a classroom calendar of events
• Technology skills are required in the following areas: Google Suite apps; interactive whiteboards; laptops and iPad knowledge
• Maintain appropriate classroom supervision for young children, guiding and redirecting their behavior as needed
• Supervise and assist children with physical needs and personal hygiene

Professional Duties:
• Participate in weekly faculty meetings and planned in-service days
• Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and parents regarding student progress and needs
• Make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities through research of trends in religious education, teaching resources, and methods of instruction
• Maintain professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings, and other professional activities
• Regularly update curriculum on Atlas Curriculum Mapping program

Other Duties
• Participate in and/or support student and parent activities designed to involve the faculty and staff
• Provide materials for substitute teachers
• Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Heads of Primary and Lower School

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
• Works in a sometimes highly stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges
• Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time
• Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; to bend, stoop, and reach overhead
• Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled classroom environment
• Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold
